Golovkin demanded a rematch, to which Canelo agreed, after both fighters were evidently unhappy with the fight ending in a draw, believing they both did enough to win the bout.

When asked on the prospect of a rematch, Golovkin bluntly said: “This was a huge drama show and of course I want a rematch.

"It was a real fight but look, I still have all my belts. I am still the champion.”

His coach Abel Sanchez had feared that his man would suffer it went to the judges and said: “This was not a surprise. We knew this was going to be a war and Canelo was very resilient.”

But Canelo insisted: “I thought I won the fight. I was superior inside the ring. I won at least seven or eight of the rounds.

“I was able to counterpunch and even make Gennady Golovkin wobble a couple of times. It’s up to the people if we fight again, I feel frustrated over this draw.”

The decision left a nasty taste in the mouth at the end of a sensational 12-round battle.

Canelo took the upper hand early on in the first round as he slipped GGG's shots and also connected with sharp shots as she showed great footwork.

He continued this momentum in the second round and he was relaxed as Golovkin struggled to find his feet in the T-Mobile Arena.

Canelo grew in confidence and began to goad his opponent who is a knockout specialist while on the ropes and the pair shook their heads at each other as they exchanged punches.

As the fighters entered the second half of the fight, GGG began to dominate the bout and he continued to pressure his opponent with immense intensity while also tagging Canelo with clean punches.

Canelo and GGG proved once again they had incredible chins, as they both connected with huge hooks but despite Canelo's efforts, GGG continued to walk him down.

And in the championship rounds, machine-like GGG maintained his stunning pace as the pair gave it their all in Las Vegas.

Before the fight the bookies were offering odds of 30-1 on a draw and even at the final bell they were offering 15-1.

How anyone could have given it to Canelo by eight rounds defies all logic.

But it does set up the prospect of a multi-million pound rematch, with both promoters already licking their lips at the prospect of another huge pay-day.

And the biggest loser could prove to be Britain’s Billy Joe Saunders, who was convinced he was going to fight the winner of last night’s Vegas battle after successfully defending his WBO title against Willie Monroe Jr in London last night.
