US Open: World No. 1 Karolina Pliskova takes just 46 minutes to reach last eight as she destroys Jennifer Brady in straight sets

The Czech Republic star beat the American 6-1 6-0 at Flushing Meadows as she continus her assault at winning a first Grand Slam

KAROLINA PLISKOVA finally played like the world No 1 and proved she could claim her first Grand Slam title in New York.

Pliskova, who had been a match point down in her previous match, destroyed Jennifer Brady 6-1 6-0 in just 46 minutes to move into the US Open quarter finals.

The Czech ace was absolutely merciless, blowing the young American off court as she made her debut in the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Pliskova said: “Today I was much better.

“I think she was nervous, first time on Ashe. I just wanted to take advantage of that.

“It’s my fourth match on this court and I enjoyed playing here as always.”

But until this match, Pliskova had been unconvincing.

After a tight opening couple of games, though, she ran away with it against poor Brady, giving the American no chance to give the home fans something to cheer on Labor Day.

Pliskova won 31 of the last 39 points to clinch a crushing victory and suggest she could go one better than last year, when she lost to Angelique Kerber in the final.

Pliskova joined countrywoman Petra Kvitova in the last eight, following Kvitova’s win over Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza.

The Czech Republic has won five of the last six Federation Cup titles – the women’s equivalent of the Davis Cup.

Pliskova said: “I think it’s great for Czech tennis there are so many of us, in the doubles as well.”

The 25-year-old also spoke of her delight of her performance, while declaring her opponent's nerves stopped her from playing her very best.

She said: "My first good match, actually. I think one of the best, even this year.

"The opponent was not the best today. Definitely she can play better than she was playing today.

"I think she was kind of nervous, and also, with the shadow, I think she just didn't feel well."
