Floyd Mayweather protege Gervonta Davis misses weight for Francisco Fonseca fight and loses his IBF world title

FLOYD MAYWEATHER protege Gervonta Davis lost his title on the eve of his boss’ biggest night after rolling in to his weigh-in an hour late and two pounds over.

The IBF super-featherweight champion should have hit the scales before Conor McGregor and his promoter for his fight with Francicso Fonseca.

But he was delayed until after the main event and even with the extra time he was still carrying too much timber.

The Baltimore banger needed three attempts to make the 130lb mark for his brilliant third-round win against British hardman Liam Walsh in May.

But he blew his chance to retain the strap on the billion-dollar Las Vegas card as the co-main event.

On Thursday Tank swerved all interviews after arriving to the undercard media day over an hour late again.

Buried under a cap and sunglasses  the 22-year-old looked drawn-out and weak and  fight fans had their worst fears confirmed by a string of tweets from the youngster.

He said: “I'm young, I'm growing. I had a chance to make the weight I knew I couldn't make it and that's that.

"I will have a belt again. I lost the belt not a fight.”

The fight with the unknown Costa Rican will still go ahead but there will be no belt on the line.

Before the debacle, the 18-0 star was promising a huge performance.

He said: "Saturday night is going to be a great performance from me.

"I'm ready to take over this sport after Floyd passes me the torch.

"I had a great camp. I hope Fonseca's camp was great because we have to put on a great performance for the fans.

"I want the fans to say that there is a new star in this sport.
