Sheffield United 1 Leicester City 4: Foxes put Blades to the sword as Demarai Gray and Islam Slimani impress

Craig Shakespeare's side ensure their spot in the third-round draw thanks to a routine victory over Championship rivals

ISLAM SLIMANI bagged a double as Leicester eventually coasted through to the third round.

Demarai Gray opened the scoring with a fantastic effort on 52 minutes just as Championship Sheffield United were sensing a shock.

And Algerian striker Slimani killed the game with a quickfire double to leave manager Craig Shakespeare breathing easily.

Once Andy King threaded the ball through, he rounded United goalkeeper Jake Eastwood and rolled the ball into an empty net before tapping in his second at the far post.

Ched Evans was handed is first start since returning to Sheffield United as boss Chris Wilder made eight changes from the side that beat Barnsley on Saturday.

He was joined by Leicester chief Shakespeare as he shuffled the Foxes’ pack, meaning Jamie Vardy was on the bench on his return to his home city.

And like many Carabao Cup ties, the attendance was well down with the top tier of the away end completely closed.

But United grew into the game and Evans wasted an early chance before David Brooks’ shot almost squirmed under Ben Hamer’s body.

Shakespeare, who saw Ahmed Musa hit the side netting, would not have been happy with what he saw until Ben Chilwell and Andy King went close in quick succession.

The sight of home-town boy and Sheffield Wednesday fan Jamie Vardy warming up was greeted as expected by Sheffield United fans – with a chorus of boos.

As the West Indies cricket team looked on before the Second Test against England at Headingley begins on Friday, both sides looked to unlock the opposition’s defence.

Caolan Lavery scored a late consolation, having missed an earlier chance, but the game was already well beyond the Blades.

But Ahmed Musa restored the three-goal lead with an injury-time fourth for the Foxes - lashing home after a slick move.
