Muir faced an uphill battle in the weaker of her two events.

Last night’s outing was only the second serious race over the distance outdoors in her LIFE.

And she finished seventh in 14:59.34 before collapsing on the track.

Kenyan Hellen Obri won in 14:56.70 and reigning champion Alma Ayana — the Ethiopian who is aiming for the distance double after winning the 10,000m by more than 45 seconds — was second in 14:57.06.

Muir said: “That was hard and I don’t think the Africans will let it be any slower in the final. I’m fine now — I was determined to get in the final.”

Also booking her place in the 5,000m final was Eilish McColgan who clocked a personal best of 15:00.38 in the slower second heat to qualify automatically.
