Dustin Johnson hits journalist flush in the face with wild approach shot during Open second round
World No 1 sprayed his second shot to par-four ninth right and it caught Irish Times' Philip Reid on cheekbone
DUSTIN JOHNSON hit a journalist flush in the face with a wild shot at Royal Birkdale.
The world No 1 flared his second shot to the par-four ninth miles right during Friday's second round.
And it looked destined for a gorse bush until it hit Irish Times golf reporter Philip Reid on the left cheekbone.
Reid was shaken by the impact of the ball smacking him clean in the chops.
But he said it wasn't the first time he had been clobbered by an errant strike.
Reid then posted a photo showing the mark the ball left on his face.
And he even joked he did the former US Open champion a favour by stopping his ball going into the bush.
Reid said: "I was a bit shook up but I'm OK now. I saved him a shot!"
Reid confirmed Johnson did say sorry for the incident.
And he presented Reid with a signed ball, which the reporter said he will frame.
