Lewis Hamilton snubs Trafalgar Square Formula One event ahead of Silverstone GP by jetting off for short holiday

Mercedes ace has decided to take a short break before Silverstone GP but is only driver to miss out on London event

LEWIS HAMILTON has snubbed the chance to drive an F1 car through London's streets after taking himself on holiday.

The Brit has decided to go on a two-day break ahead of the British Grand Prix - despite a major event in the capital.

Every other current F1 driver will attend the showpiece in Trafalgar Square today from 1pm, with the cars taking to the streets around Whitehall from 5pm.

Currently world champion Nico Rosberg will also be in attendance along with former F1 star Jenson Button.

But Hamilton will be glaring omission from the line-up after announcing on Twitter that he was going away for a few days.

He Tweeted: "To my loving fans, I can't wait to see you in Silverstone. Until then, I'm away on a two-day break. God Bless you all. Love, Lewis."

Hamilton's no-show is bound to upset the sport's new owners, Liberty Media.

And in a thinly veiled statement they highlighted that the Brit was the only one not to take part in the event.

A statement said: "We invited teams and drivers to join us at F1 Live London and we had a fantastic response from all the teams and 19 of the drivers.

"Today will be a great day for London's Formula 1 fans, as we invite them to experience the sport, seeing race cars and drivers close-up, sharing the passion for F1 ahead of the British Grand Prix."

SunSport understands that Hamilton received special permission from his Mercedes team to skip the event and is in no way in breach of his commercial contract with the team.
