Roger Federer breezes through into the quarter-finals at Wimbledon after beating Grigor Dimitrov 6-4 6-2 6-4
The 35-year-old cruised past his Bulgarian opponent in straight sets on Centre Court as he looks to win his eighth Wimbledon title
ROGER FEDERER proved that an old guy with man flu should not be sneezed at.
The 35-year-old produced his best performance of this year’s Wimbledon tournament so far in a demolition of Bulgarian heart-throb Grigor Dimitrov.
Federer, the oldest player left in the men’s singles draw, cruised to a 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 victory which puts him into the last eight and makes a little bit of history for the illustrious Swiss.
He has now reached 15 Wimbledon quarter finals – more than anyone – having overtaken legendary American Jimmy Connors with this comprehensive victory.
Not bad for the OAP of SW19 who seems to be improving with each match after shrugging off a heavy cold last week.
He is still to drop a set after four matches and is on course to win an unprecedented eighth Wimbledon title.
Dimitrov, 26 and 13th seed, was supposed to be his toughest opponent yet but rolled over without a whimper on Centre Court.
Being broken twice in the second set one of two low points of a forgettable match for the younger man who is tipped to one day win a Grand Slam.
For when Dimitrov had the nerve to show a bit of fight in the third set and break the greatest player of all time to level at four games each, Federer hit back in the very next game to go 5-4 up and serve for the match – and his place in the record books as well as the quarter finals.
Speaking after his victory, Federer said: “He did give me some opportunities and I was happy to take advantage of them.
