Who is Fabio Fognini? Andy Murray’s flamboyant Wimbledon third round opponent has beaten him three times before
Italian heads to Centre Court with a 50/50 head-to-head record against the champ
ANDY MURRAY faces his toughest test of Wimbledon so far as he takes on flamboyant Italian Fabio Fognini.
The world number 29 knows the Scot well and will be looking to cause an upset on Centre Court.
Here's all you need to know about him.
Who is Fabio Fognini?
Fognini was born in Sanremo, Italy, in 1987.
He started playing tennis at four years old and is also a keen football fan, supporting Inter Milan and local club Genoa.
Additionally, he counts himself as a keen fan of MotoGP racer Valentino Rossi.
Fognini is married to retired former US Open champ Flavia Pennetta.
What are his biggest achievements?
Fognini's best grand slam performance was in the 2011 when he reached the French Open quarter-final.
But his most career defining tournament was the 2014 Davis Cup, where he led Italy to the semi-final, overcoming Andy Murray and Team GB in the process.
Fognini has reached the fourth round at both the Australian and US Open, but Wimbledon is his weakest slam, with this year's run to round three equalling his best displays in 2010 and 2014.
What is Fognini's style of play?
Fognini is a flair player who likes to play from the baseline.
He is capable of mixing up powerful ground strokes with regular drop shots.
But, reassuringly for Murray, he is a clay court specialist and has yet to prove he can adapt to the grass.
What is his record against Andy Murray?
Fognini has a more than respectable record against the Scot, winning three and losing three.
The pair have never faced each other in a grand slam, but did meet in the Rio Olympics, with Murray winning 6-1, 2-6, 6-3.
Although Fognini triumphed in their most recent meeting in March, on the clay at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Rome.
