David Haye splits with trainer Shane McGuigan after comeback talks during injury rehab

One-time world champ is insistent that he will carry on in the ring once he recovers from an Achilles injury

DAVID HAYE has split with trainer Shane McGuigan after comeback talks during his injury rehab.

It is understood that Haye, 36, insisted he would carry on with his bid to become a two-time world heavyweight champion once he recovered from an Achilles injury.

Haye ripped his Achilles in the fifth round of his heavyweight clash against Liverpudlian Bellew in March but still hobbled on until the 11th, when McGuigan threw in the towel.

It is claimed McGuigan, one of the most respected young coaches on the modern scene, was worried about the long-term effect of Haye going under the knife.

Haye said: “Shane and I have come to the mutual decision.

“Both parties agreed that moving forward, we weren’t right for each other.”

The Londoner, who also won the world cruiserweight title, first quit the ring after he knocked out Dereck Chisora way back in July 2012.

He did not fight again for three years before he blew away Australian Mark De Mori in little more than two minutes.

McGuigan was in his corner for that comeback fight and steered him to success over Arnold Gjergjaj last year before the 11th-round disaster against Bellew.

Many feel Haye should have been pulled out of that fight a lot sooner than he was but he insisted on carrying on — seriously aggravating his injury.

Haye is now searching for a new man in his corner and he added: “My rehab is going well and I will make a complete recovery.”
