ONE of the world’s biggest cycling events is starting again today – and even has its own Google Doodle to celebrate.
This year the famous race is commemorating its 100th edition since it first started and fans will be eagerly looking out for the talented favourites.
What is the Giro d'Italia Google Doodle?
Google has celebrated the historic race with a graphic tribute to the mountainous cycling event.
The animated image shows a number of silhouetted cyclists battling up hills with the sun behind them.
In the foreground, a cyclist wears a pink (or maglia rosa) jersey, which is awarded to the cyclist with the best combined time across all the preceding stages.
What is Giro d'Italia and when did it first begin?
Giro d'Italia is an annual bicycle race that is primarily held in Italy, and occasionally passes through some nearby countries.
The race launched on May 13 1909 with 127 cyclists taking part.
It soon became a regular event, but the schedule was interrupted during the two world wars.
Riders now compete from all over the world, and flock to Italy during late May or early June.
The route changes slightly each year, but usually takes in the stunning scenery of the Alps, including the Dolomites.

This year 22 international teams will be competing in the scenic yet gruelling route that takes in some of Italy’s most stunning towns.
What is the Giro d'Italia route?
The race takes in 2,200 miles of Italian countryside.
It starts in Sardinia before heading down to Sicily for stages four and five.
From there the riders take to the mainland, cycling the entirety of the country from South to North and ending in Milan.

Many will flock to watch the cyclists battle for victory in Italy, but you can also watch from home if you wish.
Coverage will be shown on Eurosport 1, which requires a subscription.
