‘I cried in my car’ – Roy Keane reveals emotional reaction to Man Utd exit after bust-up with Sir Alex Ferguson

ROY KEANE broke down in tears following his acrimonious departure from Manchester United.

The former Red Devils skipper left the club by mutual consent in November 2005 following his infamous MUTV interview after their 4-1 defeat to Middlesbrough.

Keane blasted several of his team-mates by name for their displays at the Riverside and claimed they "let down the club" in an interview that wasn't aired.

An explosive row with Sir Alex Ferguson, in which he told the Scot "we need f***ing more from you", proved to be the straw which broke the camel's back.

Keane was all too happy to leave the club following a tense meeting with Fergie and former club CEO David Gill but ended up shedding a tear once the reality of his exit hit home.

During the latest episode of Stick to Football, brought to you by , the Irishman admitted: “When I left United, I did cry that morning. Cried in my car.”

Despite his explosive departure, Keane is still beloved by the Old Trafford faithful.

But the former Republic of Ireland international doesn't have the same love for his former side.

The 53-year-old revealed: “I don’t have that affinity with the clubs I’ve played for.

"I don’t support Manchester United, I don’t support Nottingham Forest."

He continued: "I have more of an insight with how it works at the club and the expectations.

"But I wouldn’t say that I’m a fan – their results don’t make or break my weekend.

"I wouldn’t go home going, ‘Get in there, that was a great win.’ I’d be looking at it in a professional way.”

Keane joined United in 1993 from Nottingham Forest for a then-record British transfer fee of £3.75 million.

He made 479 appearances for the Red Devils, scoring 51 goals and racking up 41 assists in all competitions.

Keane left The Theatre of Dreams having won 17 trophies with the club, including seven Premier League titles.
