  • Five Pem clubs left have NEVER won trophy

An unlikely winner could get their hands on the FA Cup this year after many of the Premier League's top clubs crashed out, writes JACK FIGG.

Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham and Liverpool are all out by the fifth round with only Manchester United and Man City from the so-called "Big Six" remaining in the competition.

Cardiff City, Doncaster, Burnley, Plymouth, Exeter, Milwall and Preston make up the lower league underdogs in the next round.

Meanwhile Brighton, Nottingham Forest, Ipswich, Wolves, Fulham, Newcastle, Bournemouth, Aston Villa and Crystal Palace are also still in the mix.

Amazingly, five of the remaining Premier League teams - Fulham, Brighton, Bournemouth, Brentford, and Crystal Palace - have NEVER won a major trophy.

And Newcastle have been waiting 70 YEARS for silverware - last winning the FA Cup in 1955.

Forest are two-time European Cup winners but their last piece of silverware was the League Cup in 1990.

Southampton have been waiting nearly 50 years to lift a major trophy - winning the FA Cup in 1976.

Everton are also former winners but not since 1995 while Wolves lifted the League Cup in 1980.

Burnley won the Championship as recently as 2023 but had not had major silverware since their top-flight title win in 1960.

Doncaster, Plymouth, Exeter and Milwall are also without major trophies in their cabinets.

  • Tel tale decline

Poor Mathys Tel hasn't had the best of starts to his Tottenham career.

And one fan appears to reckon the past week for the loanee striker from Bayern Munich has been seven 'n hell.

The Frenchman played the whole game as Ange Postecoglou's men slumped out of the FA Cup 2-1 at Aston Villa yesterday.

And a mischievous X user posted: "Mathys Tel: - Joined Spurs on Monday - Knocked out the EFL Cup on Thursday - Knocked out the FA Cup on Sunday Welcome to Spurs."

  • Giggs names Amorim's top task

Man Utd legend says Ruben Amorim's priority for restoring glory is to show more "guts" at Old Trafford “back to being a fortress”.

It's recently been more like a sandcastle than the "fortress" Giggs is demanding.

But the controversial 2-1 fourth-round win over Leicester showed what the Red Devils can do at home - albeit with a bit of luck and a major improvement after the breakk.

Giggs said ahead of the fifth round draw: “You have to show some guts when things aren’t going well at Old Trafford.

“When people used to play here, they would say the pitch seemed massive. They said they felt that they couldn’t get near any of us.

“But at the moment it looks like it’s the reverse — it looks like it’s too big for our own players.

“And it’s horrible to see but we need to somehow turn that around where we’ve got that fear factor again.

“First and foremost, you need to get Old Trafford back to being a fortress. We need to make sure that we don’t let teams come and play — and we make it a horrible place to come again.”

  • Cup wide open?

Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea are already out - as well as Tottenham, although Ange Postecoglou's injury-hit side are only 14th in the Prem.

So many reckon it will be one of the most open last-16s for a long time.

The two Manchester giants will fancy their chances of shrugging off indifferent Prem campaigns with FA cup glory.

Aston Villa and Newcastle will be well fancied.

And what of Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth continuing to transfer their fantastic top-flight form to the Cup?

  • A shame of two halfs

Plymouth's new role as the nation's favourite FA Cup underdogs was marred by one supporter's 'fashion' faux-pas with his choice of football shirt!

The man was spotted in the crowd during Sunday's 1-0 defeat of Liverpool in a... half-and-half top.

He might have thought it was colourful to wear both the green of Plymouth and the red of Liverpool.

But viewers appeared to reckon he was a colour fool!

Fzns on social media quickly had fun with their verdicts.

One posted: "Absolutely disgusting scenes. No place in football for it."

    Another reckoned: "Straight to jail."

And a third wrote: "MY GOD. MY EYES."

  • Sim you win, sim you lose...

Surely you can't get many things more spectacular than a simulator 'predicting an FA Cup draw!

Step aside Paul the Octopus and mystic meerkats...

SunSport's FA Cup draw simulator has predicted each fifth-round fixture - with only three potential all-Prem ties.

    Here's the full prediction:

    • Preston North End vs Plymouth Argyle
    • Millwall vs Man Utd

    • Brighton vs Doncaster/Crystal Palace
    • Fulham vs Burnley
    • Ipswich vs Wolves
    • Man City vs Cardiff City
    • Aston Villa vs Newcastle
  • Why the video assistant only comes in NOW

Leicester, Birmingham and Chelsea are among the clubs who fell foul of huge goal controversies over the weekend.

And even Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim appeared baffled as to why video assistant referees will only be used from the fifth round on.

After Harry Maguire appeared well offside for United's winner over Leicester, the Red Devils chief said: "With VAR it was not a goal, and I think it's important to have because it's fair for the game.”

FA chiefs reckon bringing in video assistants from the last 16 will help ensure a "consistent refereeing approach for all clubs taking part".

And the Prem can point to greater accuracy in the use of VAR this season.

Their data suggests 13 mistakes were spotted in 70 referrals to the video assistant referee.

That's compared to 20 from 61 at the same point of 2023-24.

  • Here comes VAR!

A fourth-round packed with controversial moments had no VAR to step in.

But the video assistant will on duty from the last-16 onwards.

The FA said in a statement: “It has been agreed that VAR will be utilised for every match in the fifth round of the competition through to the final at Wembley Stadium...

“VAR has previously only been used in the Emirates FA Cup for matches at Wembley Stadium and at Premier League grounds due to the infrastructure, workforce, and costs required for its operation.

“This decision ensures that there is a consistent refereeing approach for all clubs taking part at the same stage of the competition.”

  • Alex and Kelly fronting the draw

Alex Scott and Kelly Somers will present the draw on BBC's The One Show.

Ex-Arsenal and England winger Theo Walcott will join Somers in picking out the 16 balls.

  • Palace to play - straight after draw

Just 35 minutes after the fifth-round draw starts, the five days of round four continue.

Crystal Palace, 12th in the Premier League, visit League Two promotion hopefuls Doncaster for a 7.45pm KO.

Let's see if the draw offers extra incentive for Rovers to pull off a big shock.

The fourth-round action concludes tomorrow when Exeter host Nottingham Forest.

  • More magic to come from Plymouth?

Plymouth chief Miron Muslic is dreaming of quickly surpassing the "biggest moment" in his career!

Barely 24 hours after the Championship's bottom side toppled Prem leaders Liverpool in the fourth round, the Argyle boss is thirsting for more FA Cup glory.

That will start of course with the draw tonight - from around 7.10pm.

Muslic said of Sunday's shock win over the much-changed Reds: "This is the biggest moment, so far, in my coaching career. No doubt.

"I'm very emotional because I realised the task... I realised the opponent, I realised it's the FA Cup, it's the biggest cup in the world, it's the most famous cup in the world and we played Liverpool.

"The gameplan was to be structured, to be organised, to be brave, to fill it with intensity and... use this huge stage.

"It's an opportunity for the players to shine."

  • Good evening and welcome to SunSport’s live blog of the FA Cup fifth round draw!

Tonight’s huge draw will take place live on BBC One during the One Show.

Last weekend’s FA Cup fourth round action produced some major upsets.

Most notably, on Sunday afternoon, Plymouth Argyle, the Championship’s bottom side, defeated Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Ryan Hardie’s 53rd-minute penalty secured a 1-0 victory for the Pilgrims and their place in the hat for the fifth round.

On Friday night, Manchester United narrowly avoided defeat to Leicester after coming back from 1-0 down to win 2-1 thanks to Harry Maguire’s controversial winner.

The Red Devils will be a side that many will be hoping to draw - and they are ball number one.

Other huge names in the fifth round include Premier League champions Manchester City, Aston Villa and Newcastle.

SunSport will bring you all the confirmed ties as they are drawn right here!
