Newcastle vs Arsenal LIVE SCORE: Carabao Cup semi-final updates as Gunners seek dramatic turnaround in second leg

The Toon have one foot in the huge Wembley final after their stunning 2-0 win away at the Emirates in the first leg last month.

Arsenal are in need of a dramatic turnaround on Tyneside to have any chance of claiming their first League Cup title since 1993.

  • Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal (Agg: 3-0)

    21. Que Sera, Sera... rings around this famous old stadium. A stadium these Newcastle fans are desperate to stay in.

  • Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal (Agg: 3-0)

    19. This time St James' Park can celebrate!

Jacob Murphy is the goalscorer, but it's all down again to the pace, power and precision of Alexander Isak.

The Swedish striker messes with William Saliba as they challenge for a long ball forward, cleverly poking around the corner for Anthony Gordon.

The winger quickly returns with a reverse and that sets Isak away again, who this time powers a shot from the edge of the area on to the crossbar.

Thankfully for the hosts, it rebounded kindly for Murphy, who made no mistake in finding the empty net.

Less than a minute after those Odegaard chances, and Wembley is within touching distance for the Toon.

  • This one does count!

  • Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal (Agg: 2-0)

    18. Here come Arsenal!

Two opportunities for Martin Odegaard in quick succession, the first a half-chance, the second glaring.

  • Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal (Agg: 2-0)

    16. The movement of Isak continues to impress.

Gabriel and Saliba - usually a defensive duo as composed as they come - are looking shaky whenever the Swede takes flight.

  • Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal (Agg: 2-0)

    14. Lewis-Skelly dinks a teasing ball into the Newcastle area, only for Dan Burn to stick out one of his long legs to poke it back to Dubravka.

  • Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal (Agg: 2-0)

    12. Gabriel urges his teammates to calm down after Raya panics a clearance straight up in the air.

He's right to urge caution too. There is still a lot of football to be played in this tie.

  • Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal (Agg: 2-0)

    10. The home fans are roaring their side, cheering every free-kick and throw-in won.

How they would love for a trophy to be brought back to the north-east this season.

  • Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal (Agg: 2-0)

    8. This game is being played at some tempo.

Gordon is as pumped up as anyone, and commits his second unnecessary foul of the night.

  • Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal (Agg: 2-0)

    6. St James' Park erupts, and it's that man again - Alexander Isak!

Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali win the ball back in midfield, and Anthony Gordon slips a pass through to Isak on the right.

The striker powers away from the Arsenal defence and hammers a beauty across David Raya into the top left corner to trigger wild scenes...

...but they start to simmer down when it becomes apparent VAR are taking a look.

Was Isak marginally offside when Gordon threaded his pass through? It's incredibly tight and takes times to confirm.

Eventually, referee Simon Hooper receives the news and announces to the crowd that the goalscorer was offside and it remans 0-0 on the night.

  • Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal (Agg: 2-0)

    3. The hosts survive the free-kick, and the subsequent corner (taken short) that follows.

Newcastle then break at pace themselves with Murphy in full flight on the right. The winger gets ahead of Martinelli, who bundles him over and is fortunate to avoid an early yellow card.

  • Kick-off - Newcastle v Arsenal (Agg: 2-0)

    1. Howay we go! Simon Hooper blows his whistle, and Arsenal get things going as they attack the Gallowgate.

And it takes just 12 seconds for Anthony Gordon to be reprimanded for a silly shirt pull on Kai Havertz deep in the Newcastle half - you don't want to be giving Arsenal needless set-pieces on a night like this.

  • Here come the two teams!

What a night at St James' Park - and the football hasn't even started yet!

This famous old stadium is rocking with flags, scarves and tifos, and is helped on its way by The Theme of the Local Hero being played live by Sam Fender's saxophonist.

The final notes of Knopfler give way to Hey Jude as the players emerge, and it can barely be heard over the noise from the terraces.

Newcastle expect. Arsenal hope. A Wembley cup final is on the line, and kick-off comes next.

  • Newcastle warm up with four

Most spectators inside St James' Park this evening had been expecting Newcastle to line up with three centre-backs ever since the teams were announced an hour ago.

With midfielder Joelinton injured, defender Sven Botman has been drafted into the side, prompting the anticipated switch in shape.

However, during the pre-match warm-up, the Newcastle defence has been observed working together in its usual unit of four.

What that means for the Newcastle midfield remains to be seen, but it is now likely that either Fabian Schar or Lewis Hall slots in to support Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes.

  • Arteta sticks with big guns

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta still believes his side can turn a 2-0 deficit around - and is keeping faith with the team that went goal crazy on Sunday.

It doesn't happen often but the Spaniard has named the same starting XI that smashed Manchester City 5-1 at the Emirates last time out.

It is only Arsenal's second unchanged starting XI this season across all competitions, and their first since October's Champions League game with PSG.

  • St James Park rally call from Howe

Eddie Howe and Newcastle have been here before.

Cup semi-final with a narrow advantage to come back to St James Park with has all the shades of the 2022-23 season, albeit that was against a soon-to-be-relegated Southampton, as the Toon boss has said to Sky Sports, "intent" is key:

"The players need to play the game with emotion but not too much emotion.

"We need to get the crowd in the game, if we don't we're not utilising a major asset that we have.

"That comes down to our intention."

  • Enemy inspiration

If Arsenal are to overturn an unfavourable 2-0 deficit, they could do worse than taking inspiration from tonight's opposition.

One of the more iconic games between these two sides may have been a league game, but the 4-4 belter which saw the Geordies come back from 4-0 down in 2011 had all the makings of a cup classic.

The scrumptious volley equaliser by Cheick Tioté exemplified the fearlessness Arsenal may need tonight if they are to stand a chance of reaching Wembley.

  • Arsenal unchanged

The Gunners demolished Man City at the Emirates on Sunday so it's no surprise to see them name the same team for another massive game tonight.

  • Joe blow

Two changes for Newcastle with Joelinton and Tino Livramento out and Kieran Trippier and Sven Botman back in.

That means a reshuffle in the Xi with Dan Burn moving from centre-back to left-back and Lewis Hall moving into midfield.

Livramento has been named on the bench but Joelinton isn't even fit enough fit enough to be a sub after he came off in the defeat to Fulham at the weekend.

How costly could that prove to be?

  • Arsenal XI

    • Raya, Timber, Saliba, Gabriel, Lewis-Skelly, Gabriel, Rice, Odegaard, Trossard, Martinelli, Havertz.
  • Newcastle XI

    • Dubravka, Trippier, Botman, Schar, Burn, Tonali, Bruno, Hall, Murphy, Gordon, Isak.
