National coach Lucas Schadlich was in the support vehicle and witnessed the accident.

The athletes suffered numerous broken bones and that will lead to "a long break from training and competition for some";.

Reports suggest team-mate Felix Gross avoided the accident despite being scheduled to train with the rest of the team.

Gross started training later and only joined the group after the accident had already happened.
