The Europa League’s inaugural league phase concludes on Thursday in what’s expected to be a chaotic night of action across Europe.

All 18 games will be played at the same time with Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham in a good position to secure automatic qualification.

And automatic qualification would be hugely helpful to Spurs given it would see them avoid playing two extra games in February’s play-offs.

For all their domestic troubles, things have been going pretty well for Tottenham in Europe.

Postecoglou’s side claimed a 3-2 victory over Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim last time out, which leaves them sixth in the league table with 14 points.

That all means that victory against Swedish outfit Elfsborg on Thursday will cement a top-eight finish.

That’s certainly the likeliest outcome according to bookmakers, who’ve priced Tottenham at odds-on 1/5 to collect maximum points – perhaps because they are unbeaten in 16 home games in all European competitions (W13 D3).

Spurs will be desperate for a routine victory to swiftly put Sunday’s defeat to struggling Leicester City behind them and give Postecoglou some breathing space ahead of next week’s crucial Carabao Cup semi-final clash against Liverpool.

As for travelling Elfsborg, they have been keeping themselves active with friendlies after their domestic campaign ended in November.

Form is a concern though given they’ve registered just two wins in their last ten games in all competitions which does, to be fair, include an impressive 1-0 victory over Ligue 1 side Nice last time out.

They’ve also lost seven of their last eight away games in major European competitions (W1), conceding 24 goals across these eight games.

This is Elfsborg’s first ever game against English opposition, and their first meeting with a British opponent since a goalless draw with Celtic in qualifying for the 2013-14 Champions League.

Richarlison is up and running following his lengthy injury absence. The Brazilian, 27, has scored twice in his last three appearances for Tottenham against Everton and Leicester.

He’s featured twice in the Europa League this season and netted against AZ Alkmaar before being withdrawn after 56 minutes against Hoffenheim. Only the injured Dominic Solanke has a higher xG than Richarlison in the Spurs squad over the last four league games.

It might sound illogical, but I get the sense that Tottenham are heading for a resounding victory over Thursday.

The Europa League has been something of a welcome distraction for the club, who are the fourth-highest scorers in the competition. They should have the firepower to overcome lesser opposition, who’ve lost all three Europa League games on the road — conceding 10 in the process.
