THE story of Leicester City is a remarkable one...

After all, as late as April 2015, a Nigel Pearson-led Leicester were dead last in the top flight looking almost certain to go straight back to the Championship.

Seven wins from their last nine games saw them survive, before Claudio Ranieri led them to the most-unlikely of Premier League titles.

That year, Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez were truly unstoppable as they won their first-ever top flight title in the club's 133-year history.

CLEVELAND CAVALIERS - Basketball

THE city of Cleveland was long-plagued by a sporting curse - where none of its major teams were able to win a major championship.

American football outfit the Browns, basketball's Cavaliers and baseball's Indians all failed to win a single championship during their history.

That was until 2016, when a LeBron James-inspired Cavs won the NBA Championship, overturning a 3-1 deficit in the Finals to beat Stephen Curry's Golden State Warriors in an enthralling series.

And you wouldn't put it past them winning it all again in 2017...

GOING into last summer's European Championships, Portugal were not even remotely tipped to win the tournament in France.

Despite having Cristiano Ronaldo, no-one was giving them a chance - especially after losing 1-0 to England in a warm-up game.

However, they just kept battling on and on and scrapped their way to their first ever major championship win, even after Ron was injured early in the final against hosts France.

The game became famous for CR7's 'management' skills, as an Eder winner in extra-time sealed the trophy for Portugal.

THE Chicago Cubs broke a 108-year curse when they finally won Major League Baseball’s World Series in November 2016.

The brave Cubbies battled from 3-1 down in the best of seven series against the Cleveland Indians in a stunning encounter in Ohio to thrill players, managers and fans… including of course, Bill Murray.

And what a relief... After all, ever since 1945 when the Cubbies threw away a 2-1 lead in the World Series, their 'jinx' had been firmly in the public eye.

The stunning year that was 2016 helped them move on from what was known as 'The Curse of the Billy Goat'.

UNTIL very recently, the Irish rugby union side were the holder of a very unwanted honour.

Despite 28 attempts, Ireland had never beaten New Zealand, suffering 27 losses and one draw.

However, the 2016 charm worked wonders as the Irish smashed the All Blacks 40-29 at Soldier Field, Chicago in November.

They may have lost to New Zealand once more since that famous win, but finally, the monkey is off their back.
