But referee Rob Jones got it wrong and booked West Ham defender Konstantinos Mavropanos for a high boot.

Blood pumped from a nasty gash on his forehead as Mavropanos contested his yellow card.

The accidental collision left the Dutchman on his back and needing treatment from the Brighton medical staff.

It came after midfielder Baleba stuck a high leg up to clear the Hammers' left-swinging corner.

But the Cameroonian's right leg struck Van Hecke, who was attempting to head the ball clear.

The Dutchman was forced to change his shirt due to the amount of blood splashed over it.

West Ham replaced Mavropanos with Jean-Clair Todibo at half-time.

Van Hecke meanwhile returned after the break and celebrated Mats Wieffer's deadlock-breaking goal which put Brighton 1-0 up.

While another said: "These officials are clueless. He's given Mavropanos a yellow card."

A third added: "That's such poor officiating."

It comes days after Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was left bloodied and bruised after suffering a horrendous facial injury during a crunch clash with Monaco.

Ivory Coast international Wilfried Singo caught Donnarumma's face - studs first - with his right foot on Wednesday.

The Italian required lengthy treatment with a huge gash pouring blood down his face.

According to French outlet , he later needed 10 staples to treat the deep cuts on his right cheek.
