Having slotted his first spot kick of the afternoon into the corner, Palmer coolly dinked his second down the middle, and beyond the helpless Fraser Forster.

The Panenka spot kick was born at the Euro 1976 final, when Czech star Antonin Panenka chipped the ball down the middle to beat West Germany in a penalty shoot-out.

Speaking to Belgian channel Playsport after the game, Palmer was introduced to the technique's history.

The interviewer asked: "The second penalty, you know who Antonin Panenka is?"

Palmer, staring blankly, replied: "Who?"

The interviewer continued: "Antonin Panenka. He was the father of your second penalty.

"The first one who did it, in a Euro finals."

Palmer then responded: "Oh, is that why it's called that? I didn't even know that."
