As if you could forget, here's our man Martin Lipton's report from Twickenham
Losing is becoming 'a habit'
Austin Healey lamented the England performance and reminded the Red Rose it won't be getting any easier - with world champions South Africa at next week.
He told TNT Sports: “For England, it’s another loss in a super close game. It is becoming a habit, and one they desperately have to shake.
“And the way you shake it is by beating the world champions [South Africa next week].
“It’s super tough. They’re playing some really good rugby but the finer details are not quite there at the minute.
“Steve Borthwick will be concerned. They’ve got to come together and give the ball to the best players at the best time, with the best opportunity.
“But I think they’ve got to ditch this defensive structure, because it’s causing them so many problems.”
'All about big decisions'
Welsh rugby legend Jonathan Davies also questioned the decision to move Marcus Smith from 10 to 15 in the late stages of the game.
Really can’t believe Borthwick moves smith from 10 in such a tight game.
International games all about big decisions.

'Big questions'
Former England star Andy Goode says Steve Borthwick has "big questions" to answer after the late defeat.
Wow what a finish from the Wallabies, fully deserve that victory. Defensively England were all over the shop at times.
Big questions for Steve Borthwick to answer when we had one of the best defensive coaches in the world just leave
Andy Goode on X'How?'
Former England winger Ugo Monye couldn't believe what he was seeing at the end of that match.
[Loss of] composure, some skill error and a huge amount of bravery from Australia. We've just scored, secure the ball and we win the game.
It's a tough challenge but even from there it shouldn't be terminal from 42 metres out.
How are you conceding a try from 40 metres knowing that the pressure's on Australia.
There's this continuous nightmare of... we can't close out a match.
Ugo Monye on TNT SportsMore from Schmidt
He played in school and came through the rugby union pathway, so he played for Australia U18 schoolboys.
So, he certainly has a rugby union pedigree albeit having played a few years of professional rugby league. Which has made him a really professional young man.
At 21 years old, he is incredibly diligent around his preparation and that diligence pays off in the way that he performs.
He’s still probably finding his feet in the game, there are subtleties that are very different, but with that diligent work ethic, that professionalism and the athleticism that he possesses, I thought it was a really confidence-boosting debut.
Joe Schmidt on Joseph Sua'ali'i'Finding his feet'
Speaking of the $5m man, Australia coach Joe Schmidt has asked the world to calm down as he is still "finding his feet" at this level.
That's despite Sua'ali'i starring with a man of the match performance at Twickenham.
I thought he was strong. I thought he was really well supported by Lenny Ikitau, Lenny was outstanding.
Even at the end of the game, he took the corner, drew the defender, released Max Jorgensen. I thought those two dove-tailed pretty well through that midfield.
Joseph obviously got a few kick-offs back for us, he’s a bit of an aerial freak. But at the same time, it was a good learning experience for Joseph as well.
I know there were some doubts expressed about him being selected and the risk. I think people will now see the opportunity of involving a young man like that, particularly the way he prepared during the week. I thought he was really professional.
Joe Schmidt on Joseph Sua'ali'iAussie Reaction
Our friends Down Under were understandably delighted with that one.
Fox Sports Australia ran the headline 'Oh. My. Goodness! Australia in Delirium' while also praising Joseph Sua'ali'i's incredible debut.
The former rugby league star signed a whopping $5million contract to switch codes - and it certainly looks like it could be a gamble that pays off.
England stats
It's not been great for the Red Rose in 2024.
England have only won four of ten matches this year - with their victories coming against Wales, Italy, Ireland and Japan - while this is the first time they've lost four matches in a row since 2018.
The 42 points they gave up against Australia was also their second most ever and it's more bad news for Borthwick as their record defeat came under his watch against France last year (53 points).
England's defence must come under close scrutiny after this one as they missed a massive 35 tackles against the Wallabies, while the 13 line breaks conceded was the most in a DECADE.
More from Jamie George
The England captain said it's 'everyone's job' to pick themselves up ahead of the clash with South Africa next week.
I think it’s my job, it’s also everyone else’s job in the squad. We have got a great group of senior players who are very good in these situations.
I think what we do very well is we address things head on. Like I sort of reiterated earlier, it is such an easy group.
There is so much excitement around what we are doing and belief in what we are doing. Of course, there are frustrations and there are going to be some people who are very frustrated at the result tonight and parts of the performance.
That’s almost fuel for us next week and how we can get better and be in the best place we possibly can to take on South Africa.
The bounce-back message is, how are we able to back up the good things with another good thing, with another good thing? That’s what Test match rugby is about.
We have got a fantastic opposition coming here to Allianz Stadium in South Africa. Back-to-back world champions, I don’t see it as a better opportunity.
Jamie GeorgeBorthwick continued
We'll debrief properly with the players about the decision-making process that happened around that point in time.
“We need to talk about what we decided to play and when we decided to play it, given the scoreboard situation, the time situation. That then gave Australia the opportunity to get back ahead.
“The players were magnificent then to put themselves in the position to then go and get in the lead again. “At that point you need to see that game out, to do all the right things around the kick-off.
“But unfortunately we knocked the ball on, we gave them one more shot. They were good enough to take it and we weren't good enough to stop them.”
More from Borthwick
“GUTTED” Steve Borthwick admitted his England blew victory - as the autumn gloom descended even further.
The Red Rose side threw away the lead twice in the last five minutes of a 10-try thriller.
England have now lost four on the spin and five out of six and Borthwick said: “It was a game we should have won and we were in a position to win it multiple times.
“The fans will be gutted and we’re gutted.
“We talked about the team developing the attacking side of the ball, talked about the team having the confidence to move the ball and you saw that.
“But we gave them far too many opportunities and made it an unstructured game.
“If you drift away from your game-plan, it leads to more errors.
“And when you turn the ball over that many times you don’t give your defence much of a chance.“
'Hard against England'
Australia's Allan Alaalatoa has revealed his pride in beating England - but insisted the hosts were "outstanding".
"That was awesome, just a really good feeling to be out there - especially in the second half," he told Sky Sports.
"There was still a lot of belief, especially off the back of a start that was not what we wanted.
"We started a bit slow, but I'm just really proud of the boys.
"We know how hard it is against England at Twickenham, a sold out stadium. They were outstanding tonight.
"It went right to the wire, but the message there was to trust our fundamentals and that's what gave us the win."
Healey's comment
Austin Healey has given his analysis of the game.
He told TNT Sports: "For England, it's another loss in a super close game. It is becoming a habit, and one they desperately have to shake.
"And the way you shake it is by beating the world champions [South Africa next week].
"It's super tough. They're playing some really good rugby but the finer details are not quite there at the minute.
"Steve Borthwick will be concerned. They've got to come together and give the ball to the best players at the best time, with the best opportunity.
"But I think they've got to ditch this defensive structure, because it's causing them so many problems."
Jamie George flabbergasted
The blueprint of how we want to play was in the first 20 minutes, but took our foot off the gas and we can’t do that, but credit to Australia.
"It’s a tough balance between closing up shop and keeping on playing and our late score showed we were being brave.
"The defensive system works, but we lost the collisions tonight and leaking 42 points at home is unacceptable.
"We need to stick to the system but get better within it.”
Match report
England suffered a last-gasp defeat to Australia.
Here's what Martin Lipton made of it below.
Borthwick reaction
Gutting. We made such a number of errors and it gave opportunities to the opposition to run in tries and they did.
"In terms of our mindset, you are seeing a team wanting to move the ball and we want that, but we have to understand the consequences of it, and we saw that today.
"We didn’t give our defence the chance to show what it can do, there was so much turnover and loose ball that they system couldn’t set itself.
"There’ll be no shortage of motivation for next week for South Africa”
What's up next
After that narrow defeat, it doesn't get any easier for England.
World champions South Africa are up next, in what'll be a tough battle.
They won't want three defeats on a spin in the Autumn Nations Series.
It would be an upset if they could.
Smith cannot see side over the line
Despite being on the losing side today, Marcus Smith put in a superb performance for England.
Had they held on for victory, he was sure to be named man of the match.
It just goes to show how quickly games can change, celebrations can turn into misery in seconds.
England suffer last-gasp defeat
It is becoming a reoccurring nightmare now for Steve Borthwick.
They work so hard to get themselves into winning positions, only to see it snatched away from them in the closing stages of the match.
Today was a little different, deep into overtime, they were trying so hard not to over-commit and give away a penalty but ended up conceding a try instead.
While there will be positives to be taken from this, there is plenty of work to do as England are looking all too beatable.
Wallabies find hidden gem down under
Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii made his first appearance in an Australia shirt today and put in a man of the match performance.
The 21-year-old defied gravity at times with some of his play and deservedly won the award.
He played a huge part in this victory and England really could not cope with his creativity.
FT: England 37-42 Australia
What a game of rugby that was.
It swayed from one way to the next, seemed like England had edged the win and then a try in added time sealed it for The Wallabies.
They played some superb free-flowing rugby and shows that Australian rugby fans have something to look forward to in the future.
Australia had a lot of young players and some of them looked like they are going to become world-beaters.
England look shell-shocked with that defeat.
FT: England 37-42 Australia
What a try to win the game that was.
A sublime pass through the back of his hand from Ikitau, set Jorgensen free down the flank and there was no stopping him.
They added the conversion to make the win seem even more convincing.
Try - Max Jorgensen (Australia)
England 37-35 Australia
80+2. Australia are working through the phases.
England have to be whiter than white now.
They cannot afford to give away a penalty.
