Ruben Amorim to Man Utd LIVE: Amorim breaks silence on announcement after Sporting beat Estrela – updates

MANCHESTER UNITED have appointed Ruben Amorim as the club's new head coach.

The 39-year-old Sporting boss replaces Erik ten Hag after the Dutchman's two-and-a-half-year tenure came to an end on Monday.

Amorim will take the reigns on November 11, with his first game in the United dugout coming away at Ipswich.

The Portuguese coach has signed a deal until 2027, with the Premier League giants holding an option for an additional year.

  • Gyokeres on Man Utd links

Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyokeres addressed transfer speculation linking him with a reunion with manager Ruben Amorim at Manchester United.

Going with Amorim to Man United? I don’t know, I’m here.

As you can see, I enjoy it at Sporting. It’s nothing I think about.

I’m sad about him leaving. We wish him all the best

  • Gyokeres on Amorim

Sporting Lisbon superstar Viktor Gyokeres addressed manager Ruben Amorim's move to Manchester United.

Reports suggest Amorim might try to bring Gyokeres with him to Old Trafford.

I't is sad that Amorim is leaving - he’s done amazing here.

We will do the same job and keep the same faith in the team.

We all wish him the best.

  • Ruben Amorim reacts

New Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim looked back at the last few days that led to his imminent departure from Sporting Lisbon, whom he will coach until November 10 before moving to Old Trafford.

It was a very unusual week. Obviously, since this whole situation came about I've felt different. I understand the anger of some fans and the disappointment. But that's life. I was moved by the ovation and that's how it is.

Even the other statement, when it came out, was on a match day. But clubs are now listed companies and they have to present all these things. There were two statements. But that's how things are, there are things that we can't control.

I'm very grateful to the fans and to everything here. People think I wanted to leave straight away. In the next home game, whether we win or lose by 15-0, I'll be there to see what the fans want to give me. I understand their anger, but we move on and time heals everything. It was the best period of my life.

  • Ruben Amorim reaction

As you would expect, the announcement of Ruben Amorim’s departure has been mixed at Sporting Lisbon's Jose Alvalade Stadium.

Outside the stadium, there was a banner which read: “Amorim, this is not your home anymore, thank you.”

Other fans, though, took flags into the ground declaring their love for the coach who led the club to two titles.

When Amorim’s name was first read out 30 minutes before kick-off, there were whistles and jeers followed by applause.

But when the 39-year-old came out of the tunnel for the game, he received a standing ovation and applauded the fans.

Another player who enjoyed a good reception from the home supporters was former Manchester United winger Nani.

He started his career at Sporting and the 37-year-old came on as a second half sub for Estrela.

  • FT: Sporting 5-1 Estrela

Ruben Amorim is heading to Old Trafford - and now Manchester United should sign Viktor Gyokeres.

On the night Amorim started his three-game farewell tour at Sporting, former Coventry striker Gyokeres maintained his stunning record at the club with a hat-trick in the first 42 minutes before grabbing the fourth in the second half.

The red-hot forward, a £20million bargain from the Championship, has now scored 20 goals in 16 games this season on top of his 43 strikes in 50 matches last term.

How United, the third lowest scorers in the Premier League, would love someone like the Swedish international.

Gyokeres’ opener was well placed from an acute angle while the next two - the third being a penalty - were just raw power. His fourth in the 70th minute was a brilliant individual effort oozing with self confidence.

That was before Maximiliano Araujo made it five for the hosts.

Yet United fans will hope their team do not defend under Amorim like the moment Sporting allowed Rodrigo Pinho to pull one back for 2-1 with an easy header.

  • Sporting Lisbon 4-1 Estrela Amadora

Ruben Amorim is showing why he got the Manchester United job as Sporting Lisbon are cruising towards their 10th win in as many matches in the Primeira Liga without breaking much of a sweat.

Sporting are dominating Estrela Amadora at the Jose Alvalade Stadium.

And Viktor Gyokeres, who has been linked with a reunion with Amorim at United, has scored all four goals.

Rodrigo Pinho got Estrela on the scoreboard as well.

  • Ruben Amorim stats

Here's how Ruben Amorim has fared before joining Manchester United:

  • Ruben Amorim's backroom staff

Manchester United's new manager Ruben Amorim is expected to bring in his own staff from Sporting Lisbon.

Amorim's assistants Carlos Fernandes and Adelio Candido are expected to follow him to Old Trafford.

The same goes for goalkeeper coach Jorge Vital, who worked with the Portguese tactician at Sporting and Braga.

And Emanuel Ferro, who is the current first team coach at the Lisbon outfit, will also be linking with the 39-year-old.

  • 'Jose Mourinho 2.0'

Ruben Amorim has been described as "Jose Mourinho 2.0" as he restored Sporting Lisbon to the top in less than four years.

Ruben Amorim is ‘Mourinho 2.0’ who turned Sporting from ‘walking dead’ into Portuguese champs… he can revive Man Utd

WHEN Ruben Amorim took charge of Sporting Lisbon in March 2020, one club official compared their situation to the “walking dead”, writes Jordan Davies.

Optimism and hope was at an all-time low.

But the Amorim-effect was almost instantaneous, guiding the Portuguese sleeping giants to their first league title for 19 years in 2020/21, losing just once and only conceding 20 goals.

Since then, Sporting have lifted another league title in 2023/24 – as well as two League Cups – and currently sit top with nine wins from nine this term.

He may be young, but Amorim already has an eye for rebuilding and revitalising fallen super powers with his infectious charisma and intense tactical philosophy that hardly ever wavers.

The “walking dead” at Manchester United must be praying for a similar sort of revival.

And they may just get it from one of the most talented young coaches on the continent – a man accustomed to breathing new life back into crumbling institutions such as Old Trafford.

Amorim has spent the last decade dreaming of one day gracing England’s Premier League, such was his admiration for an ex-United boss in Jose Mourinho growing up.

Often nicknamed ‘Mourinho 2.0’, Amorim spent a week with his coaching idol in an internship capacity at United’s Carrington training base in 2018, going on to cite him as his “reference point”.

United should not be expecting a mini-Mourinho, as Amorim said himself: “Mourinho is one of a kind. There won't be another Mourinho. Mourinho is unique.”

And yet, you cannot help but compare the two.

For all the mismanagement in the Old Trafford hot seats over the years, this would be a real get – finally a slap in the face United’s Prem rivals have no answer for.

  • Previous managers introductions

Here's how all the post-Sir Alex Ferguson managers were introduced by Manchester United:

What Man Utd said on hiring EACH of their post-Fergie managers

    David Moyes

"All the skills needed to build on United's phenomenal legacy."

    Louis van Gaal

"One of the outstanding managers in the game today.”

    Jose Mourinho

"Quite simply the best manager in the game today."

    Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

"A wealth of experience, with a desire to give young players their chance and a deep understanding of the culture of the club."

    Erik ten Hag

"One of the most exciting and successful coaches in Europe."

    Ruben Amorim

“One of the most exciting and highly rated young coaches in European football.”

  • Ten Hag's open letter

Erik ten Hag issued a touching open letter to Manchester United fans after his dismissal.

Dear fans, Let me start by thanking you. Thank you for always being there for the club. Whether it was at a game far away or a tough match at Old Trafford, your support has been unshakeable.

The atmosphere at Old Trafford has always been electrifying, thanks to you. I felt it many times. Also in away games, it gave the team and me an incredible feeling to hear the United chants taking over the opponents’ stadiums, whether the game was in England, Europe or during the summer tours.

I always enjoyed meeting Manchester United fans throughout the world. Walking the streets and being able to chat with fans in England, Europe, Asia, Australia, the USA - you inspired me and radiated a strong sense of unity. That’s what makes United supporters so special. I want to thank you for giving me this feeling and for your support.

I also want to thank the staff in every department of the club for their unwavering support in good times and bad. We won two trophies - achievements that I will cherish for the rest of my life.

Of course, my dream was to bring more trophies to the cabinet. Unfortunately, that dream has come to an end. I wish all Manchester United fans nothing but success, trophies and glory.

Your support and the warmth I received from everyone at the club helped me feel at home. Thank you for this chapter in my life. Erik.

  • How to pronounce 'Amorim'

Turns out we've been pronouncing Ruben Amorim's name wrong.

Here's how Manchester United fans should say his name according to this supporter:

  • Viktor Gyokeres latest

Manchester United have been linked with a move for Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyokeres after landing Ruben Amorim as their new manager.

According to Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg, however, United have actually not played a role in the race for Gyokeres.

Nevertheless, it is possible the Red Devils will become involved soon after landing Amorim, who coached the striker at Sporting and is a "big fan".

However, Man Utd would face competition from four other clubs in Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Chelsea.

  • More on Diomande

One of Europe’s most in-demand young defenders, landing Sporting Lisbon star Ousmane Diomande would be a major coup for Manchester United.

Diomande has previously been chased by Liverpool and Arsenal, with Bayern Munich also linked.

Sporting will only be willing to sell the centre-back if a club were to activate his £70million release clause.

The 20-year-old came through the youth academy of Danish outfit Midtjylland.

The Ivory Coast international joined Sporting in 2022 for just £6.1m, enjoying a breakout season last year and catching the eye of Europe's elite.

  • Amorim targets Diomande

New Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim wants to bring one of Europe’s most promising centre-backs with him to Old Trafford.

Sources close to United say Amorim is determined to adopt a three-at-the-back system in the Premier League.

United have three top-quality centre-back options to ensure the Portuguese tactician can implement his favoured three-man backline, once Leny Yoro returns to fitness.

A trio of Yoro, Matthijs De Ligt and Lisandro Martinez provides the balance at the back.

But United lack quality options in reserve, with Harry Maguire unlikely to be at the club for much longer while Victor Lindelof has long been linked with an exit, and, at 36, Jonny Evans won’t be around forever.

With that in mind, Amorim is keen to bring Ousmane Diomande from Sporting.

  • Ruben Amorim trolled

A whisky brand has delivered a cheeky warning to new Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim – not to "balls it up" when they get behind the desk.

The job, one of the biggest in world football, has been described as a poisoned chalice in the past.

Fireball cinnamon whisky liqueur parked the tongue-in-cheek van outside Old Trafford, which also offering a free drink to the incoming coach.

  • More on Ten Hag summit

Manchester United players reportedly believe former manager Erik ten Hag caused at least two losses.

A source said: "The players definitely know they have underperformed in some games this season and have been honest about that.

"But they were also left puzzled by some of Ten Hag’s decisions which didn’t make sense to them.

"Either leaving players out, subbing off players who were playing well at crucial parts in games, or instructing the team tactically in ways that they believe cost them games.

"They reckon his decisions were directly responsible for the equivalent of losing two games and picking up a point instead of a win."

  • Ten Hag 'cost points'

Frustrated Manchester United stars held their own private summits into the club's disastrous start to this season.

The United players concluded former boss Erik ten Hag was responsible for a loss of eight points.

Some of the dressing room went through the failures this season in private and tried to identify what was going wrong.

They took culpability for a woeful performance against Tottenham and losing against West Ham after missing numerous chances to score.

But they also believed Ten Hag’s tactics and substitutions during games had seen them drop eight points.

If they had bagged those points, Man Utd would now have 19 points - one more than Arsenal in third and Aston Villa in fourth.

  • Agbonlahor on Amorim

Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim is the right man for the Manchester United job, claims Aston Villa legend Gabby Agbonlahor who did his coaching badges with the Portuguese tactician.

You could tell he was so into it in a way that he had to get his badges to start managing.

When you look at what he's done since leaving Braga to Sporting Lisbon, breaking 19 years without winning a league title.

I think Manchester United have got the right man.

  • Another Red herring?

Manchester United bound Ruben Amorim - dubbed Jose Mourinho 2.0 - was linked with rivals Manchester City, who saw him as a potential successor to Pep Guardiola if he were to leave in June.

It means United have moved for another City transfer target in an effort to gazump them, with the most recent major example being Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo made a triumphant return to Man Utd after shock transfer links emerged suggesting he was set to move to Man City.

The Red Devils moved swiftly to prevent a shock move to their rivals, and while Ronaldo personally had a good goalscoring season, his arrival severely hindered the overall system of the team and stopped the club from moving for other, more urgently needed, targets.

CR7 is not the only case of United moving to one-up City, only for the Red Devils to be bitten on the bottom by the deals not working out as well as hoped.

Harry Maguire and Fred were both linked with City before moving to Old Trafford.

Former academy stars for United and City respectively in Paul Pogba and Jadon Sancho had reportedly drawn from the Citizens before they completed moves to the red side of Manchester.

And Alexis Sanchez is arguably the biggest case of United falling foul of City transfer trickery.

  • Amorim salary ranked

New Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has become the fourth highest paid manager in the Premier League.

United confirmed today that Amorim will take over from Erik ten Hag from November 11.

The Portuguese tactician's £6.5million contract sees him go narrowly above Liverpool's Arne Slot on the richlist.

    More below:

  • Ruben Amorim announcement

Manchester United confirmed Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim will take over on November 11 and Ruud van Nistelrooy will remain in charge on an interim basis until then.

Manchester United is delighted to announce the appointment of Ruben Amorim as Head Coach of the men’s first team, subject to work visa requirements.

He will join until June 2027 with a club option of an additional year once he has fulfilled his obligations to his current club.

He will join Manchester United on Monday 11 November.

Ruben is one of the most exciting and highly rated young coaches in European football.

Highly decorated as both a player and coach, his titles include winning the Primeira Liga twice in Portugal with Sporting CP; the first of which was the club’s first title in 19 years.

Ruud van Nistelrooy will continue to take charge of the team until Ruben joins.

  • Enzo - Ruud a 'fantastic guy'

Chelsea and Enzo Maresca will go up against Ruud van Nistelrooy's United on Sunday.

And the Blues boss can't wait to face off with his former teammate, who is acting as interim boss at Old Trafford.

The pair spent a season together at Malaga in 2011-12.

Maresca said: "I didn’t speak with Ruud. I will give him a big hug before the game.

"We expect a tough game. Fantastic guy. Humble, very professional.

"We had a very good group of human beings with Malaga. It’s nice to remember that kind of moment."

  • Pep talk

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has welcomed Ruben Amorim to English football.

But he claims he has "no advice" for his crosstown rival.

Guardiola said: "Welcome to Manchester United, to England, and I congratulate him next Tuesday [when City play Sporting].

"We faced each other two or three seasons ago in the Champions League.

"No advice. I’m not the right person to give advice to colleagues.

"Not because he’s [at] United, I think they have a lot of people in United that will tell him the situation in the club, so I cannot give him advice."

  • Ruud era continues

Ruud van Nistelrooy will stay on as interim boss until Amorim arrives at Old Trafford on November 11.

The former United striker will be in charge for another three matches, all of them at home.
