Aston Villa vs Bayern Munich preview

A memorable night at Villa Park awaits as Unai Emery's Aston Villa host Bundesliga juggernaut Bayern Munich in a repeat of the 1982 European Cup final.

It was the club's finest hour when beating the German giants 1-0 in Rotterdam courtesy of Peter Withe's second-half goal to clinch their only ever major European title.

And though the 2024-25 Champions League competition is still in the early stages, it could well be another historic evening for the Villans.

Goals Galore

It's very difficult NOT to see a deluge of goals in this contest. As mentioned, Bayern have scored 57 goals in their last 13 games under Vincent Kompany, while Villa have netted 2+ goals in each of their last six competitive matches.

This new Champions League format and a total of eight league matches appears to have convinced club's to release the handbrake in search of three points and that looks likely to continue this week at Villa Park.

Harry's time

Vincent Kompany seemed optimistic that talisman Harry Kane would be fit and available for the Champions League bout against Aston Villa, despite having limped off during Saturday's 1-1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen.

Speaking after that match, Kompany told Bayern’s official website: "Hopefully it’s nothing serious. I’m not a doctor, but I hope he can play against Aston Villa on Wednesday."

And given we expect plenty of goals, Kane should be heavily involved having scored 54 goals in 52 appearances for Bayern. He also boasts a great record against Villa with eight goals in 13 appearances.
