  • Crowning moment

On the day he handed an OBE to Ally McCoist, Prince William gave his royal approval to his football team tonight.

HRH kicked every ball it looked like, feeling the stresses and strains.

But in the end, the day concludes with a thumbs up.

  • Match report

Arne Slot made history as Mo Salah hit a brilliant clincher.

Jurgen Klopp’s successor became the first Liverpool manager to win eight of their first nine games in charge.

But while things were flying for the Dutchman at the start - and his side finished up on a high thanks to that 75th-minute Salah special - he also had to squirm through plenty of scary moments.

For after a brilliant, pulsating start the Reds hit the reverse gear that for a long time threatened red faces..

Slot had freted in the build–up, warning his players that “mediocrity was not acceptable.”

And so when they were running rings around Bologna in the first 25 minutes, his warning that the Serie A club were more dangerous than their 13th position in Serie A looked seemed little more than scare-mongering.

  • Match report from Villa Park

There was 1980s nostalgia in the air at Villa Park - so trust the bloke called Duran to bring the house down.

Aston Villa 1 Bayern Munich 0 is the most famous scoreline in the history of this great football club - ever since the night Peter White won them the European Cup in Rotterdam 42 years ago.

That was when Birmingham’s own Duran Duran were a permanent fixture at the top of the charts.

Jhon Duran, Aston Villa’s extraordinary supersub, always leaps off the bench, hungry like the wolf.

And he netted a spectacular late winner - his sixth goal of the season, and his fifth as a sub - to recreate the result of Villa’s finest ever victory.

With two wins and two clean sheets in this monumental Champions League group, Villa are proving themselves well worthy of a place back on European football’s grandest stage.

  • More from Villa

Morgan Rogers has been a standout and a consistent performer in this Aston Villa team since his move in the summer.

He told TNT Sports: "Surreal - the atmosphere, the occasion, playing one of the biggest teams in world and competing like this.

"It's been mad. That's how quick football can change. I've always believed in myself. Be patient and the time will come. Luckily I found a manager who believed in me.

"I was probably in my shell when I came, trying to fit in. He gives me that confidence and belief in my ability.

"We knew they were going to have more of the ball so it was about trying to hit them on the counter.

"It was about allowing them to have the ball in certain areas but when it's in midfield we have to be at it.

"This is why I play football. This is the pinnacle, it means everything to me. It's a pinch me moment but I have no time to sit and dwell on it."

  • How we stand

The long, lengthy Champions League table, with seven sides on maximum points after two games.

Eight sides are yet to get off the mark.

  • Tight on paper

Here are those numbers behind Liverpool's win.

They didn't get things their own way but it's a sign of a good side when they can come away from games where possession is tight and the opposition have more efforts on goal, that they come through with a win.

  • Keep rolling

Alexis Mac Allister admits Liverpool need to defend better if they're to continue their early season success.

He told TNT Sports: “I’m really happy personally but for the team. Alisson made some good saves. Sometimes I think we need to defend better, at least Ali showed how good he is. I’m happy for him and for the team.

"For me, a goal is a goal, in this team when we make a run Mo can see everything. Really happy for him, I think it was a good night for everyone.

“It is clear we are in transition, we are happy with the ideas, we are trying to get there. There is room for improvement, that's why we work very hard every day."

  • Aston Villa match stats

The numbers behind that thrilling Aston Villa win over Bayern Munich tonight.

Emi Martinez was by far the keeper worked the most. But the work he faced, he dealt with splendidly.

Bayern with 70% of the ball but their forward line - led by an ineffective Harry Kane - failed to capitalise.

  • 'Unreal win'

Emi Martinez is probably unlucky not to have picked up the Player of the Match trophy.

The Villa skipper admitting tonight was the loudest he'd experienced Villa park and says he loves playing there.

He told TNT Sports: "It's unreal to be fair. This is the loudest Villa Park that I've heard since I joined the club, that's for sure, it was hurting my ears at some point. It's a club that is moving forward.

"It's the main reason why I stay in this football club. I love playing here, I love the fans, this is a win for them.

"You know with Harry Kane, you know that he's always going to hit on target at some point in the game so I've working a lot with moving and making saves.

"We are committed to defensively Champions League, we need to transmit that into the Premier League now, we are conceding some sloppy goals in the Premier League, we need to find that balance, we know we can keep clean sheets so we move on from here."

  • Ran away with it

Jhon Duran has been named Player of the Match for Aston Villa tonight.

How long can Unai Emery keep this guy on the bench? He's delivering each and every time.

UEFA's Technical Observer Panel said: "At only 20 years old, he produced the decisive moment in the game."

  • FT: Liverpool 2-0 Bologna

Another win for Arne Slot and Liverpool as they continue their impressive start to the season.

Alexis Mac Allister's early goal was added to by a Mo Salah screamer with 15 minutes to play and the Reds are one of a number of sides with two wins to their name.
