Bas Van Belle dead at 24: Top cyclist dies unexpectedly as Tour de France winning team lead tributes to star
CYCLIST Bas van Belle has unexpectedly died at the age of 24.
The Dutch cycling association (KNWU) announced the tragic news on their website.
They said Van Belle's passing was "unexpected".
Their statement said: "It is with great sadness and sorrow that the KNWU learned of the unexpected passing of Bas van Belle.
"We mourn his loss, Bas leaves a great void in the world of cycling."
Van Belle is the older brother of Team Visma star Loe van Belle.

The statement added: "Our thoughts go out to his family - especially his parents and sister and brother Lisa and Loe - his friends and everyone who knew Bas.
"We will remember him as a warm-hearted and friendly person, as well as a talented cyclist."
Team Visma, who compete in the Tour de France, also paid tribute on social media.
A team statement read: "Dear Loe and family, We are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of your brother and son, Bas.

"We wish you strength and courage to face the days ahead, and our hearts go out to all of Bas’s family and friends.

Van Belle last competed in a race last Sunday, finishing 65th in the Ronde van Midden-Brabant.
