MANCHESTER UNITED fans have demanded the club replace the current squad with legends of old.

The calls to drop the flops came after watching a Red Devils legends team take on Celtic at Old Trafford.

Wayne Rooney curled in a wonderful free-kick to give the hosts the lead.

His strike partner, Dimitar Berbatov, also looked sharp as he linked up well with Rooney.

While Michael Carrick also showed he still had plenty in the locker with a mazy run through the Celtic defence.

Some viewers even claimed that the retired English midfielder would start over Casemiro.

And the game ended 1-1 before Celtic won a penalty shootout.

But fans could not help but think of Man United's previous success with these players.

Many flocked to social media to claim that the club should swap the old boys in.

One posted: "Terminate the contracts of the current United players and bring back the legends."

A fourth said: "Current Rooney starts ahead of Rashford and I’m not even trolling."

A fifth joked: "I wished for times like this."

Another added: "Bring them back to United."

Man United have had an unconvincing start to the Premier League season.

After losing the Community Shield to Man City, Erik ten Hag's side have lost two out of three of their domestic campaign.

Since the Dutchman's arrival, the club has won the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup.

However, the performances have been inconsistent and led to a record-low 8th-place finish in the league and a disastrous Champions League campaign last term.

Before the legends match, Rooney claimed that he would have liked to have played for Celtic before he retired.

He told : "Celtic has always been a team I have followed and wanted to win.

"But it did not work out and I did not get that chance."
