It worked, and Mosquera appeared to put his hand around the German's neck as he got up.

He seemed to change his mind and pulled it away while protesting his innocence, probably just in time to get away with it.

The referee and VAR were satisfied but Arsenal fans thought otherwise.

One said: "Havertz being strangled you love to see it."

"Strangled Havertz...then this. This guy is weird," added another referring to a separate incident when Mosquera reached for Gabriel Jesus' BUM before being shoved to the ground by the Brazil striker.

A third fumed: "Kai Havertz goes down and gets strangled - Bukayo Saka gets a yellow card instead."

A fourth screamed: "HOW WAS THIS NOT A RED CARD???"

A fifth had clearly had enough already, adding: "PL referees already making the usual mistakes & decisions in GW1."

It was not a vintage performance but two goals and three points are a good start for Mikel Arteta.

The Spaniard has called for perfection from his side as they look to eclipse Pep Guardiola's dominant Manchester City.

Next up is a trip to Aston Villa, who beat West Ham 2-1 in today's evening kick-off.
