Major sporting event to start from INSIDE a supermarket ‘in the cereals aisle’ in never-before-seen change

A STAGE of one of the biggest cycling races in the world will begin in a SUPERMARKET.

The Vuelta a Espana is the third and final Grand Tour of the year after the Giro d'Italia and Tour de France.

It will begin in Lisbon on August 17 but make its way into Spain three days later and run until September 8.

And it is stage six on August 22 that has caught the attention of many sports fans.

That is because it will start in a Carrefour supermarket in the city of Jerez de la Frontera.

Journalist broke the news, saying: "Stage 6 of the Vuelta starts from INSIDE a Carrefour supermarket."

He went on to jokingly add: "Cats are going to be lining up in the cereals aisle, next to the Golden Grahams & the Frosties…

"So many questions about this that aren’t answered in communique.

"What happens if, say, Nairoman [Nairo Quintana] decides he needs some disposable razors two minutes before the start? Can he just ride out through till & not trigger the alarm? If he brings loyalty card, does he earn points? etc."

Cycling fans poured in with their reactions to the unique concept as they commented on the unusual starting venue.

One said: ";This is why we love the Vuelta so much. Absolutely bonkers stuff year after year."

While another added: "I hope ALL the checkouts are open, or there will be a bit of a squeeze at the tills, worse than lots of street furniture that."

And a third replied: "Will the riders be required to purchase an item and use the self-checkout before they can exit?"

Carrefour are a well-known company among Tour de France viewers as they are the sponsor of the polkadot jersey.

American Sepp Kuss is set to defend his 2023 Vuelta crown, but Giro and Tour de France winner Tadej Pogacar will not be aiming for an unprecedented third Grand Tour of the year.

Jonas Vingegaard and Remco Evenepoel, who rounded out the Tour de France podium, will also miss the Vuelta.
