Tony Clubb feels he is too old to play for England, aged just 29.

But he revealed that fans should not expect him to be lining up in the World Cup at the end of the year.

And the terrifying neck injury, which saw surgeons operate through his throat and place a metal cage in his neck, is not the reason why.

He feels he is getting a bit too long in the tooth.

Prop Clubb - younger than Wigan team-mates Sean O’Loughlin and Joel Tomkins, who both want to make Wayne Bennett’s squad – said: “England hasn’t entered my head and to be honest, I think I’m a bit too old.

“I turn 30 this year and in rugby terms, it’s a bit too old!”

While Clubb has declared himself over the hill, several of Shaun Wane’s squad have put themselves into England contention.

Sources say Oliver Gildart’s performance may have pushed the centre up the pecking order, while Sam Powell’s showing did not go unnoticed.

However, Bennett revealed that only a maximum of three players from each Super League club will be called up for May’s test against Samoa.
