Luka Modric's second-half strike seemed to be enough for the Croatians to join Group B winners Spain in the knockouts.

However, Mattia Zaccagni's 98th-minute equaliser snatched second place off the Croatia.

  • Croatia 1-0 Italy

    62. What a massive chance for Italy to equalise.

As a cross is played into the box, Bastoni rises and has a completely free header.

He cannot keep it below the crossbar and really should have scored.

  • Croatia 1-0 Italy

    60. There seems to be more urgency in Italy's attacking play now.

Croatia look to break on the counter but a great tackle wins the ball back for The Azzurri.

Modric is then shown a yellow card for a clumsy challenge on Barella.

  • Croatia 1-0 Italy

    58. Well that goal should certainly spark this match into life.

As things stand, it is now Croatia in second place.

Although it would be likely that Italy would progress as one of the best placed teams in third.

  • Croatia 1-0 Italy

    56. What drama we have had in Leipzig in the last few minutes.

Modric saw his penalty saved by the Italian keeper but did not let it get to him as he was on hand minutes later to poke home a rebound as Donnarumma parried another shot.

The ground erupts as the Croatia fans celebrate the goal.

  • Goal - Luka Modric (Croatia)

  • Croatia 0-0 Italy

    54. Modric steps up to take the penalty but Donnarumma gets down well to make the save.

What a huge moment that could be in this game.

Big chance for Croatia to take the lead.

  • Penalty to Croatia

  • VAR review in progress

  • Croatia 0-0 Italy

    52. Italy seem content in absorbing this pressure.

They know they are in the driving seat as the score stands.

Despite having the majority of possession in this half, Croatia have still struggled to work Donnarumma.

  • Croatia 0-0 Italy

    50. Croatia are starting the second half on the front foot.

You can imagine their manager had a few choice words for them at half time.

Modric is pulling all the strings for Croatia as ever.

  • Croatia 0-0 Italy

    48. Croatia come forward but once again pay the price for poor quality of ball into the penalty area.

Kramaric wins a free kick deep in the Italian final third.

Chance to send the big men up for this set piece.

  • Croatia 0-0 Italy

    46. Budimir has replaced Pasalic for Croatia.

Frattesi has come on for Pellegrini who may have picked up an injury for the Italians towards the end of the first half.

From Croatia's perspective it is definitely a more attacking change they have made.

  • Kick-off: Croatia 0-0 Italy

We are back underway in Leipzig.

Croatia have it all to do to stay in this tournament.

Italy get the second half started.

  • HT: Croatia 0-0 Italy

The stakes could not be higher in this final round of group games.

Croatia however have not got out of first gear.

Italy know that a draw would be enough to see them through and have no need to chase the game.

  • HT: Croatia 0-0 Italy

Despite having more of possession Croatia really haven't done enough to look like a side wanting to win this match.

Italy have created more clear-cut chances so far and only the Croatian keeper has prevented them taking the lead.

For both sides, their school report for that half would read 'could do better'.

  • HT: Croatia 0-0 Italy

The referee brings the first half to a close.

Croatia are not forcing their attacking game on the Italians enough.

Despite a draw being enough for The Azzurri, they have also had the better chances in that half.

  • Croatia 0-0 Italy

    45. Well considering the stakes tonight, this game has failed to spark into the classic we were hoping for.

Italy will be content with their performance as they have protected Donnarumma's goal well.

We are going to have one additional minute.

  • Croatia 0-0 Italy

    43. Retegui tries to win a header on the halfway line but wins a free kick for a high foot from the Croatian defender.

The Azzurri cannot do anythig with it and gift possession back to the Croatians.

Modric twists and turns before laying it off to Susic but he cannot find a way through the Italy defence.

  • Croatia 0-0 Italy

    41. There are far more Croatia fans in the Leipzig Stadium than there are Italian fans.

Their side really isn't giving them anything to get excited about so far in this first half.

Dalic will be wondering what he can do at the interval to turn his side into more of an attacking threat.

  • Croatia 0-0 Italy

    39. Neither of these sides really have any pace up top.

As a result, they are finding it difficult to get onto the threaded balls in behind the defence.

You would think that Croatia would have more urgency in their game given the situation but we are not seeing it just yet.

  • Croatia 0-0 Italy

    37. Calafiori plays the ball into Pellegrini on the edge of the box.

He does well to turn and find himself some space to get a shot away with his left foot.

Livakovic gets down well to save.

  • Croatia 0-0 Italy

    35. Italy win another free kick on the halfway line.

Gvardiol is penalised for blocking off his opponent.

As things stand, this result would be enough to see the Italians through.

  • Croatia 0-0 Italy

    33. Looking at the replay, Donnarumma should have dealt with that cross far better.

He parried back out into the danger area and was lucky that Croatia were unable to capitalise.

Modric is all over the pitch at the moment, appearing in pockets of space looking to make something happen.

  • Croatia 0-0 Italy

    31. Modric drills a ball across the box.

Donnarumma gets a big hand to it but Kramaric almost seizes upon the loose ball.

Fortunately for the Italians, they are able to clear their lines.

  • Croatia 0-0 Italy

    29. Croatia have had no issues in creating chances in their opening two games, only Germany have had more shots.

With around half an hour gone in this game, they have only managed the single shot on goal.

Zlatko Dalic's side need to up their game in the final third of the pitch.
