WOUT WEGHORST needed just one touch to fire Holland to victory - and leave Martin Keown red-faced.

The former Manchester United striker came off the bench to fire Holland to a 2-1 victory over Poland in the opening game of Group D.

Adam Buksa got the Poles off to a flyer at Euro 2024 when he put them ahead inside 16 minutes.

But Cody Gakpo levelled the scores before the break and it was the Dutch who dominated throughout the second period.

However, despite their dominance, Ronald Koeman’s side looked set for a frustrating afternoon as they struggled to breakthrough the resilient Polish backline.

That led to Wout Weghorst’s introduction with just under ten minutes left to go - and he did not take long to make an impact.

The ex-United forward, who has just spent the past season on loan at Hoffenheim from Burnley, had only been on the pitch two minutes when he put Holland ahead.

Nathan Ake was given too much space to drive forward, and the Man City star slipped in a ball for the onrushing Weghorst to meet and guide home into the net from close range.

That was the quickest goal ever scored by a Dutch player coming off the bench.

And, incredibly, it means he has now scored with his last three shots at international tournaments after his brilliant two-goal salvo against Argentina at the World Cup in 2022.

However, it seemed that Arsenal legend Martin Keown had not done his homework on the 6ft 6in striker.

He was co-commentator on ITV for the game and wondered out loud about when the last time Weghorst had scored.

Well, the answer was actually less than a week ago.

And, even more embarrassingly for the ex-England defender, Weghorst had actually scored TWICE in the nine days leading up to today.

He grabbed a goal in 4-0 friendly victory over Canada on June 6.

Weghorst then got another as they beat Iceland 4-0 on Monday before his matchwinner against Poland.

And it did not take fans long to stick the boot into Keown for his apparent lack of preparation.

EURO 2024 LIVE: LATEST UPDATES FROM THE TOURNAMENT

One post on X said: “Martin Keown asking when Weghorst last scored…6 days ago and before that, 10 days ago. How does this clown keep a job?”

Another wrote: “135 minutes ago was when Weghorst last scored for his club. Last friendly match before euros for his country so Martin Keown saying he has no idea when he last scored is poor and lazy commentating.”

While a third said: “Martin Keown couldn’t tell you when Weghorst last scored, he scored the two international games before todays game.”

Meanwhile, others were more interested in Weghorst and his heroics saving Holland once again.

“WOUT F***ING WEGHORST MY GOAT,” said one, while another claimed “Wout the ledge!”

Another said: “That's my striker man, Weghorst. He's an incredible bagsman.”

The forward left Burnley on a temporary basis for a third time last summer, having initially moved to Besiktas 12 months previous.

After six months in Turkey he joined Manchester United in January 2023, but failed to make much of a positive impression at Old Trafford.

Weghorst scored two goals in 31 appearances for Erik ten Hag's side but helped them to win the Carabao Cup before returning to Burnley for pre-season.

However, that did not last long, and he soon headed to germany, where he has scored seven times for Hoffenheim.
