Claudio Ranieri reveals he would ‘gladly’ swap 5,000/1 Leicester title triumph for biggest career regret

CLAUDIO RANIERI has confessed he would have 'gladly' swapped his sensational 5,000/1 title triumph with Leicester City which rocked the world.

For the joy of leading his hometown club Roma to one Serie A success.

Ranieri will forever go down in history as the man who pulled off the greatest sporting shock of all time when he steered the Foxes to the 2015/16 title.

But the Rome-born 72-year-old says he would give it all up for one successful Serie A title success with the club he kicked off his professional career with and supported all his life.

Speaking to Italian paper, Corriere dello Sport, Ranieri was asked if he had any career regrets, now he had announced his retirement from football.

The former Foxes boss replied: "Not winning the Scudetto with my Roma.

"I can say it today: I would've gladly exchanged the Leicester title with a Roma Scudetto."

Ranieri's dream slipped through his fingers in 2010 when he led his beloved Roma to the top of Serie A with four matches remaining.

But a costly defeat at home to Sampdoria robbed him of his dream as Jose Mourinho's Inter Milan leapfrogged them to seize the title.

Leicester legend Ranieri says winning the title with the Foxes was easier after he 'tinkered,' with the team Nigel Pearson inspired to pull off the Great Escape the previous season.

"All I did was change the system to 4-4-2, changed the full-backs and put N'Golo Kante in," Ranieri said.

"He was the inexhaustible engine of the team, because he pressed, fought hard, pushed forward, defended.

"At one point I thought he might be capable of both putting in the cross and getting on the end of it to head in during the same move."

The veteran boss also guided Cagliari to Italy’s top flight again in 2023, after completing the same feat in 1989.
