HOLLAND have beaten Poland 2-1 in their opening game at Euro 2024.

Robert Lewandowski replacement Adam Buksa bagged the opening goal of the game for the Poles with a brilliant header.

Liverpool's Cody Gakpo levelled soon after with a deflected strike.

But ex-Man Utd man Wout Weghorst came on with 10 minutes to go and scored his side a winner just two minutes after coming on.

  • Poland 0-0 Holland

3: We had the Swiss claiming that Fondue was better than Goulash. We've seen Albania supporters snapping spaghetti in front of Italian fans, and now claims that Kielbasa is superior to Gouda… where does it end?!

On the pitch, it looks like Denzel Dumfries is playing really high up on that right flank with Nathan Ake a little more reserved on the other side.

Liverpool's Cody Gakpo has the first chance of the game when cutting onto his right and forcing a decent save from Wojciech Szczesny at his near post.

  • Poland 0-0 Holland

1: Booooo! Nedim Bajrami's record is safe for another game.

  • Poland 0-0 Holland

    1: We're underway in Hamburg.

It took 23 seconds for Albania to leave a record-breaking mark on the European Championship when Nedim Bajrami scored the fastest goal in the tournament’s 64-year history.

    We want 22 seconds!

  • Here they come…

The players have just emerged from the tunnel to a mostly orange crowd at the Volksparkstadion in Hamburg. Shirts, not fake tans…

The odds suggest that Holland should win this contest, on paper anyway. But can they make a statement against a Robert Lewandowski-less Poland?

    National anthems on the way.

  • Inexperienced

Holland's midfield trio of Jerdy Schouten, Tijjani Reijnders, Joey Veerman have just 24 caps between them. I suppose the experience in behind them will make up for that, especially in these early games.

  • Just noticed

Karol Swiderski, who would normally deputise for Robert Lewandowski, is among the substitutes having nearly recovered from injury.

How did he come a cropper? He hurt his ankle while celebrating a goal in Poland's friendly victory over Turkey last Monday.

    Couldn't write it.

  • Blimey

The Netherlands will play a game at a major tournament without a player from Ajax in the starting line-up for the first time since 2008 and for just the 12th time ever.

  • 20 games

Poland boss Michal Probierz appears to have done his homework on the Dutch, and that homework includes showing his players 20 clips of their opponents in action.

    Not 19, not 21 - 20.

Probierz said: "We know how strong the Netherlands are. We have respect for them, but we are not afraid of them.

"There has been progress in Robert Lewandowski's recovery, so we hope he will come back for the game against Austria. Our tactics? If we go into the game just to survive, it won't work.

"We have a plan and I hope we will stick to it. We have prepared our players well in terms of analysing our opponents; we have shown them clips from 20 Netherlands games."

  • Tip

Given their strength at the back, it doesn't seem beyond the realms of possibility that a defender could come up trumps, especially given their height from set-pieces.

And it's Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk who's been the main man for the Dutch of late having netted three times in their last seven outings.

Ronald Koeman also announced that his dominant centre-back would be the designated penalty-taker for Holland in the Euros. He looks a very decent price at 13/2 to get on the scoresheet.

  • Stats your lot

    • Poland are winless in their past 12 meetings with Netherlands in all competitions (D5 L7), since a 2-0 home win in Euro 1980 qualifying.

    • This will be the first meeting between Poland and Netherlands at a major tournament. Coming into Euro 2024, only Germany (19) have beaten more different nations at the European Championship than Netherlands (17).

    • Poland are playing in a fifth consecutive European Championship, having qualified for none of the previous 12 editions. They’ve won just two of their 14 matches at the tournament (excluding shootouts), with both victories coming in the 2016 group stages (D7 L5).

    • The Netherlands are taking part in their 11th European Championship. They won the tournament the last time it was held exclusively in Germany in 1988, beating the USSR in the final (2-0).

    • Only Germany (six) have reached the semi-finals of the European Championship more often than the Netherlands (four) since 1988. However, the Netherlands haven’t made it to the final four since 2004.
  • "Major operation"

Some worrying scenes going on in Hamburg before this contest.

A major operation is taking place in central Hamburg after a man with an axe threatened police officers, officials in the German city say.

Police say they shot and seriously injured the man, who is receiving medical attention.

Reports say the incident took place near a fanzone for supporters of the Dutch football team.

A police statement said that a man threatened police officers with a pickaxe and an "incendiary device".

The Volkspardstadion is around five miles away from the centre of Hamburg and, so far, things appear to going ahead as planned at the ground.

  • We're in the mix

Never one to be particularly short on confidence, Holland boss Ronald Koeman fancies his side to challenge for the ultimate prize at Euro 2024.

Koeman, a European Championship winner as a player in 1988, doesn't think any one nation stands head and shoulders above another, perhaps other than France anyway.

He said: "In my opinion, there is not a big favourite, maybe the French team a little bit more than the rest because they have a lot of experience, they have won already big tournaments.

"But I think it will be an open fight between different nations – and one of them is Holland."

  • Poland

Michal Probierz is indeed without talismanic striker Robert Lewandowski. Antalyaspor's Adam Buksa will therefore spearhead the attack with Sebastian Szymanski and Kacper Urbanski in support.

16 goals in 35 appearances for Buksa this season, and six in 15 for Poland.

  • The Dutch

As expected, Ronald Koeman has opted for a 4-2-3-1. Memphis Depay spearheads the attack, flanked by Xavi Simons and Liverpool's Cody Gakpo.

There's more Liverpool in the starting XI with Virgil van Dijk alongside Stefan de Vrij at the back, while Ryan Gravenberch settles for a place on the bench.

Aged 21 years and 303 days, Holland's Bart Verbruggen is the third-youngest goalkeeper to ever play at the European Championships.

  • Starting XI

The starting XI's have been revealed, and there's not too much in the way of surprises here.

Poland: Szczesny, Frankowski, Bednarek, Salamon, Kiwior, Urbanski, Romanczuk, Zielinski, Zalewski, Szymanski, Buksa

Subs: Skorupski, Bulka, Dawidowicz, Walukiewicz, Piotrowski, Swiderski, Moder, Lewandowski, Grosicki, Puchacz, Szymanski, Bereszynski, Piatek, Slisz, Skoras.

Holland: Verbruggen, Dumfries, De Vrij, Van Dijk, Ake, Schouten, Rejinders, Veerman, Simons, Depay, Gakpo.

Subs: Bijlow, Flekken, Geertruida, De Ligt, Wijnaldum, Weghorst, Frimpong, Van de Ven, Blind, Malen, Maatsen, Zirkzee, Bergwijn, Gravenberch.

  • Strengths

It's not too difficult to see where the quality lies in this Holland side.

Ronald Koeman has several top defensive assets at his disposal including Nathan Ake, Matthijs de Ligt, Micky van de Ven, Stefan de Vrij and Virgil Van Dijk.

That's played out exactly how you would expect with Holland conceding just once in their last seven games in all competitions.

The concerns? Well the absence of Teun Koopmeiners and Frenkie de Jong in addition to a lack of 'elite' attacking options.

  • Up for it

Erm, yeah - just a tad. That was four hours before kick off...

  • Form

Both sides have won their fair share of matches recently.

Poland arrive unbeaten in eight matches, although some of their wins in that streak including the likes of the Faroe Islands, Latvia and Estonia.

They did, however, beat Turkey and Ukraine in their two friendlies in June albeit with less possession and conceding a combined 38 goal attempts.

The Netherlands have registered some thumping wins in recent months, beating Iceland, Canada and Scotland 4-0 - sandwiched between a 2-1 loss to hosts Germany.

  • Late arrivals

It's not easy being overlooked for a European Championships.

And it's also not particularly ideal to be drafted in at the 11th-hour, as it turns out.

As mentioned, Joshua Zirkzee and Ian Maatsen were brought in as cover for injured duo Frenkie de Jong and Teun Koopmeiners but both were enjoying themselves on holiday.

Zirkzee was at Walt Disney World in Florida when he got the call, meanwhile Maatsen was on a yacht near Mykonos.

Maatsen's dad actually drove for three hours from his home in the Netherlands to Dortmund to pick up his son's football boots before another three-hour drive to the Dutch camp in Wolfsburg to drop them off.

Do they not have people to do those things for them these days?!

  • Ideal preparations?

    Not quite.

In fact it's been kind of a doomsday scenario for Poland, who are without Barcelona forward Robert Lewandowski.

The Polish talisman, 35, is out of the Group D match at the Volksparkstadion in Hamburg with hamstring trouble.

And there's added concerns because Poland's all-time record goalscorer could miss the whole group stage.

It's not been too great for Holland either with Frenkie de Jong (ankle) and Atalanta midfielder Teun Koopmeiners (groin) both withdrawn from the squad.

They were replaced by Bologna forward Joshua Zirkzee and Borussia Dortmund wing-back Ian Maatsen.

  • Day 3

So what's on the menu today?

Well, we've another three fixtures to get stuck into including England's tournament opener against Serbia.

Before that we'll see Ronald Koeman's Netherlands clash with Poland, and Slovenia are in action against perennial dark horses Denmark at the Stuttgart Arena.

  • Afternoon…

Hello folks and welcome to our LIVE coverage of Poland vs Holland from the Volksparkstadion in Hamburg, Germany.

Well, so far so good for the competition.

We've seen four matches, 16 goals and some outstanding performances from a couple of leading contenders to clinch silverware.

That's good news for neutrals and particularly good news for my colleague, who stuck a fiver on 200+ tournament goals at 125/1.

    Good luck with that, Craigy.
