XANDER SCHAUFFELE'S dad was holed up in a shipping container 4,400 miles away when he won the PGA Championship.

The American romped to the trophy with a brilliant final round 65 to see off rivals Viktor Hovland and Bryson DeChambeau.

Schauffele, 30, set a new record for any Major championship with his score of 21 under.

However, his dad Stefan missed the drama as he was not at the Valhalla Golf Club.

Stefan had been a regular fixture on the tour showing his support for his son.

Instead, he was in Hawaii inside his "sanatorium"; shipping container.

The container is in a rural hillside in Kauai, while overseeing the construction of a family compound.

He told : "It’s my sanatorium.

"Where I can heal and lose weight and get better.

"It’s been a lot on my body, getting to this point in life."

He has insisted that he does not feel like he has missed out and will get his time with Schauffele.

He added; "I’m not really a big fan of Kentucky.

"I get my moment with Xander later.

"When we hug, whenever that is, that’s going to be just fine. That suffices."

Stefan also ruled out the possibility of his son joining LIV Golf.

He said: "No chance. Xander is not chasing the money.

"Xander is about legacy. And as my opinion — just as his father — there was never a chance.

"What we told LIV in Saudi Arabia, with Xander beside me, was that if there is no path back to the PGA Tour and if there is no chance at World Ranking points we do not have anything to talk about.

"Even if you throw hundreds of millions of dollars at him. That word still stands."
