Henderson arrived as a free agent but is among the club highest earners.

The England star was on a supposed £350,000-a-week in the Middle East - before accepting a pay cut down to £85,000-a-week to seal his move to Ajax.

But with the Amsterdam-based side in danger of not qualifying for next season's European competitions, the club may have to balance the books by offloading Henderson.

Ajax currently sit fifth in the Eredivisie table, meaning they could make the Europa League qualifying rounds or the Conference League.

But teams in the Champions League will see an extra £372million in prize money given out to the 36 sides in the group stages.

Ajax missing out on this windfall could force the club into selling key players.

Henderson and ex-Premier League star Steven Bergwijn could depart, according to .

And should the central midfielder leave before July 27, it would be his third transfer in a year.
