He was also known for his leg development, which in his prime measured over 30 inches.

He has trained a number of other bodybuilders, including Germany's David Hoffmann.

I made no money doing bodybuilding - when I retired I had to build the sport up and it was my mission to raise prizes

Platz competed in seven Mr. Olympia events - that is an international bodybuilding competition held annually - and finished third in 1981.

Naturally, Platz's incredible legs are down to an immense exercise regime.

Those exercises have traditionally included back squats, leg curls, and calf raises.

Platz recently revealed that Arnold Schwarzenegger provided his career with a real boost in the 1980s.

Before becoming a mainstream movie star, Schwarzenegger was a professional bodybuilder and at one time a rival to Platz.

Despite that, he gave Platz a welcome helping hand.

"After ’81, Arnold was going into acting more and more," Platz said.

"He goes, ‘look I want to have everybody contact you, because I’m going into the movies and films, and I’m busy doing that. Is it okay?’

"So I’m like, ‘yeah sure let’s do it.’ They’re like getting 10,000 to show up for the half a day! I’m like ‘holy smokes'.

"It was like he opened that door for me. He’s a ruthless kind of guy, but he’s very generous.”
