However, the jockeys couldn't stop their horses and most carried on all the way until the finish line.

With just two runners left, 25-1 Rose Fandango was victorious.

The only other horse to finish was 6-1 shot A Pint Of Bear.

Absolute Dream, Carry on Aitch, Gordonstoun, Kimifive and Mudlahhim all completed the race after the flag was waved so were consequently disqualified.

Oriental Spirit, Port Noir, Ravenglass and Swiss Rowe pulled up but were also disqualified.

Winning jockey Rossa Ryan called it a "one in a million" event.

And racing commentator and Sun Racing columnist Matt Chapman labelled it “extraordinary”.

Fans found it hilarious, with one commenting: "Elite Chapman moment."

Others watched on in disbelief, saying: "Absolute shambles."

Another added: "Well, that was embarrassing."

After sealing victory, winning jockey Ryan revealed he thought there was a malfunction between the start button being pushed and the lids on the stalls opening.

He explained: "I was lucky because I could only just about hear the whistle and the lads were roaring behind me to pull up.

"Luckily, mine pulled up. To be honest, I didn't quite know the rule that if you pass the line you're out.

"It's a first but we got away with it."
