The conversation quickly switched to major tournaments, specifically the World Cup.

Lineker then revealed that he recently learned of a stat from Hewitt regarding his World Cup performances.

The Leicester legend said: "The chair of the FA was speaking and she very kindly gave me a mention as the England player with the most World Cup goals.

"She said actually I've scored 10 percent of them.

"Now my maths are alright but even I can work out that 10 percent, having scored 10 goals, means that we must have scored 100 goals at the World Cup."

Lineker then went on to ask: "How many did you get, Alan?";

And Shearer responded: "One World Cup, four games, two goals."

Lineker then said: "Two goals, that's two percent, that's not too bad!"

"With 15 minutes to go we’re thinking we’ve managed to see a lot of new players. We’ve had our share of the game.

"We’ve had as many attempts on goal as they have. The difference in the end was one moment. That is the ruthlessness at this level.

"I know when you lose there will always be a negative reaction. But, given all the changes that we’d made, I thought the crowd were with the team. They could see a lot of young players going in and doing well. I’m not down on the performance."
