Arsenal vs Porto – Champions League LIVE RESULT: David Raya the hero as Gunners reach the quarter finals after penalties

The Gunners are into Friday's quarter-final draw

DAVID RAYA was the hero as Arsenal reached the last eight of the Champions League via a penalty shootout.

In a nervy game in north London, in which the Gunners trailed 1-0 after the first leg, Leandro Trossard's superbly worked goal brought them back on level terms.

Arsenal dominated possession and chances during the 90 minutes and thought they had done enough to earn a victory but Martin Odegaard's goal was controversially ruled out for a foul by Kai Havertz in the build up.

The game went into extra-time but neither side seemed willing to commit men forward - before the game headed to a shootout.

David Raya, the villain in the first leg, was the hero as he made two brilliant save down to his left - to deny Wendell and Galeno - with all the Arsenal takers hit the target to progress into the last eight.

The Gunners are now into the Champions League draw later this week.

All of a sudden they try a direct ball into space for Trossard.

There was way too much on that pass for the Belgian to have any chance of catching it.

  • Arsenal 1-0 Porto

  • View from SunSport's Jordan Davies at The Emirates

What a difference a goal makes, and what a different outlook Arsenal and Mikel Arteta will have on this tie now.

Leandro Trossard was having a rather forgettable first half – as were the Gunners in all fairness – before popping up on the left and executing a neat one-two with Martin Odegaard.

The pass from Odegaard was exquisite, perfectly weighted, and the finish from Trossard was just as brilliant and composed when the pressure was really telling for the hosts.

Arteta screamed “VAMOS” and sprinted around his technical area, while Porto already look a bit deflated, so close to holding out Arsenal until half-time, which would have been huge.

The Arsenal boss will surely be getting into his players at the break now, urging them not to sit back and go for the kill. Another goal and Porto will be forced to change tact, which is really not their style, especially away from home.

  • HT: Arsenal 1-0 Porto

Arsenal are just edging the game in all aspects.

This Porto side are proving tough to break down but will have to come out of their shell more in the second half.

For Mikel Arteta's side, they just need to catch the visitors on the break.

  • HT: Arsenal 1-0 Porto

The referee brings the first half to a close.

It has been an entertaining affair but Arsenal have the all important goal.

No doubt both managers will have plenty to say to their players during the break.

  • Arsenal 1-0 Porto

    45. For the neutral, that goal should open this game up more as both teams need to score to go through.

This will create gaps in the respective defences, giving us more chances with end to end attacking play.

We are going to have one minute added.

  • Arsenal 1-0 Porto

    43. What a massive goal that could prove to be for Arteta's side.

They will need to score again if they are going to go through without the need for extra time.

That is the last thing the manager would want with their current fixture list.

  • Arsenal 1-0 Porto

    41. Fantastic play by Odegaard to create the chance.

He plays a deft pass in between the defenders for Trossard.

  • Goal - Leandro Trossard (Arsenal)

  • Arsenal 0-0 Porto

Everyone is fighting back for the visitors and even their forwards are getting back with the challenges.

Saliba is given a yellow card for pulling Evanilson to the ground.

  • Arsenal 0-0 Porto

    37. This is all going according to plan so far for Porto.

Much like the first leg, Arsenal seem to be playing into their arms and more importantly, tactics.

The longer the game goes on, the more desperate The Gunners will be to try and find a goal.

  • Arsenal 0-0 Porto

    35. Getting to the interval with a clean sheet would be a massive win for the visitors here tonight.

Diogo Costa has had very little to do in terms of shots to save so far.

  • Arsenal 0-0 Porto

    33. Odegaard swings a cross in but Costa gets a fist to it.

Saka looks to work it back into the box but it is defended well, at the expense of a corner.

As ball is crossed in, he cannot beat the man at the near post.

  • Arsenal 0-0 Porto

    31. Great lifted ball into the back post from White almost catches the visitors out.

The veteran Pepe gets a vital touch before colliding with the post himself.

Havertz was lurking behind him, waiting to head that one in.

  • Arsenal 0-0 Porto

    29. Ties like these would have been much more tense affairs when the 'away goals rule' existed.

The away side would know that all it took was one attack and they double the number of goals their opponents need.

No danger of UEFA bringing that back anytime soon.
