The damage is so severe that already British Athletics bosses fear he will never recover his fitness enough to race again.

The pair are believed to have been travelling on the same bike and collided with the car on the wrong side of the road as they travelled round a bend.

It is understood the car was being driven by a tourist confused about which side of the road to travel.

Ellington represented Britain at the Rio Olympics last year in the 100m and the 4x100m relay.

His team-mate Levine is also still in hospital on the Spanish island, although it is believed his injuries are not as severe.

A British Athletics spokesman said: “Regretfully we can confirm that James Ellington and Nigel Levine have sustained injuries following a road accident in Tenerife on Tuesday evening.

"Both athletes are receiving medical treatment and are conscious and stable. British Athletics medical staff are with the athletes and liaising with hospital staff over their treatment.
