What are the different types of horse racing bets, what does ‘each way’ mean, what is a NAP bet?
THERE are loads of different bets to have on racing and it can be tricky to keep track of what they all mean.
Sun Racing goes through some of the more popular below and explains them so you know exactly where your money is going.
Single
One bet on a horse to win a race.
Each way
This is when you back a horse to win and place in the same race. If the horse fails to win you can still make a profit from the place part of your bet.
Place terms vary by bookie and by race but you can generally expect them to pay on three places, with the place odds being one-fifth of the win odds.
Double
Backing two separate horses to win two separate races.
Treble
Most read in Horse Racing
Backing three separate horses to win three separates races.
Four-fold, five-fold and accumulator
The number of selections in a bet. An accumulator can take in any number of these and is just another term for a multiple.
Trixie
Four bets on three different selections. The beauty of a trixie is that even if one horse loses you can still win the bet.
Winnings will be calculated on any winning doubles and the treble.
Patent
Very similar to a trixie but this includes the three selections as singles as well.
Lucky 15
A very popular type of bet. Four selections combined into 15 total bets made up of four singles, six doubles, four trebles and one four-fold acca.
A lucky 31 and 63 follow the same formula just with more selections.
Forecast
Betting on the first and second horses home in a race. Three for a tricast.
Combination forecast
Betting on the first and second horses home in any order in a race but doing so by using three selections.
Two of the three have to come in the top two for the bet to win. Four selections for a combination tricast.
Reverse forecast
Betting on the first and second horses home in any order. Three for a tricast.
Yankee
A multiple bet consisting of four selections, which make up 11 bets in total.
There will be six doubles, four trebles and one four-fold. You need at least two horses to win to make a profit.
Heinz
Six selections made up of 57 total bets. The potential payouts on these types of bets is massive but they come with considerable stakes too.
A heinz is made up 15 doubles, 20 trebles, 15 four-folds, six five-folds, and 1 six-fold acca.
You need at least two of your selections to be successful to guarantee a winning return.
Super Heinz
Same as above but with seven selections comprising 120 total bets.
Goliath
Same as above but with eight selections combining a massive 247 bets: 28 doubles, 56 trebles, 70 four-folds, 56 five-folds, 28 six-folds, eight seven-folds and one eight-fold acca.
Not for the faint-hearted.
Tote Placepot
One of the most popular types of bet.
The Placepot is a bet where you select a horse to be placed in the FIRST SIX races of any meeting.
You can pick more than one horse in a race – you just multiply the number of selections in each race to calculate your stake.
So for staking it’s 2x2x1x1x2x1 which adds up to just eight lines in the Placepot.
You can stake what you want upwards from 5p a line. 20p a line is £1.60, 50p is £4 and so on.
Provided at least one of our horses in each race is placed, we get a payout!
