Stam took Reading to the brink of the Premier League in 2017 and coached Dutch sides PEC Zwolle and Feyenoord.

And the ex-Holland defender, 51, has now signed a one-year deal to manage amateur side DOS Kampen.

It marks a return to Stam's hometown club, where he began his career before leaving for Zwolle 32 years ago.

The former centre-back won the Champions League, three Premier League titles and an FA Cup with United between 1998 and 2001.

He will combine his new post next season with working as a TV pundit.

Stam said: "It is great to be back.  We had good conversations, and agreed for me to combine the two roles.

"I helped the club in the background last year in setting up youth development.

"Then they asked me if I wanted to take on a greater role as head coach.
