But he bounced back with victory at the Bahrain Masters by defeating Van Gerwen.

The pair would rematch in the final of the Dutch Darts Masters with Littler this time conceding defeat.

And it comes just as the Premier League is due to begin on February 1.

Littler earned his spot on the Premier League lineup following his superb run at the World Championships at the start of the year.

But the 17-year-old said: "Hopefully I haven't burnt myself out for the Premier League next week.

"But I'll take this as match practice and it goes into my World Series ranking, but I can't wait to go down to Cardiff."

Littler avenged his PDC defeat to Luke Humphries in the Netherlands and also beat Gerwyn Price.

But he was beaten by Van Gerwen and said: "I just went leg by leg, hold by hold, I took out 180s and he'd come back with one," said Littler.

"I wired the 170 and he gets it, throughout the game every hold was unbelievable. I put him under pressure but he just wouldn't miss.

"The crowd have been amazing, they wanted Michael to win and I get that. Respect to Mike.

"It went hold by hold and he finally got me in the end."
