Salah, 31, suffered a setback in his country’s 2-2 draw with Ghana on Thursday.

The forward limped off the field before scans confirmed he had tweaked his hamstring.

But despite claims Salah would be out for a matter of days, he surprisingly jetted BACK to England to undergo treatment at Liverpool.

And it has now emerged that Salah could out for up to a month.

That would potentially see him miss the rest of Afcon, with the final taking place on February 11.

Salah’s agent Ramy Abbas confirmed: “The injury is more serious that first thought. He will be out for 21-28 days.

"His best chances at participating in the current Afcon is by undergoing intensive rehab in the UK and rejoining the team as soon as he is fit.”

One man who believes Salah should have stayed put with Egypt is national team legend Ahmed Hassan.

He slammed the captain for returning to Liverpool and reckons his absence could damage Egypt’s hopes of reaching another final.

Ex-Besiktas and Anderlecht midfielder Hassan, capped 184 times by his country, said: "I’ve always backed Salah and I was very happy with his presence as captain of the Egyptian national team.

“I had no problems with what he said, but it turned out that he was plotting his departure from the Egypt camp.

"Do the Afcon regulations allow a player to leave the national team’s camp and come back again?

“He had the possibility of bringing in someone from Liverpool’s medical staff to be with him during the competition.

“Again, he is the captain. He should stay with the team no matter what, even if he only had one leg to stand on.

"He even said himself that it’s the Egyptian national team, not Salah’s national team, and this is true.
