Littler’s perfect opening leg of his 6-3 win over pal Aspinall made him the youngest player to throw a nine-darter in the senior competition.

The previous record had been held by Dutchman Van Gerwen at 17 years and 10 months.

Reacting to the breathtaking moment, Eddie Hearn, chairman of the PDC, wrote on X: “WOW! Kid’s a superstar!”

Meanwhile, Sky Sports pundit Wayne Mardle said: "There will be no one bigger than Littler.

"The kid is outrageously talented. How can you not be excited!!!"

He then joked: "Darts is difficult… I’m not sure Luke Littler agrees with me.’’

Littler, who turns 17 on Sunday, defied his years as he dismantled MVG to win 8-5.

Following the win, 16-year-old Luke The Nuke asked: “What have I done? You tell me. I don’t know. I’m happy to win.

“Earlier on in the quarters, I hit the nine-darter against Nathan. I played well tonight.”

He added: “No one probably believes me but I have not thrown a dart since. Thursday was the first proper practice I have put in.

“It has all paid off. Michael is still one of the best. He is the very best. I’m just happy to win on my debut.

“It has been unbelievable. I haven’t really set any goals. I didn’t expect to pick up this trophy.”

Does the runner-up win money at the Bahrain Darts Masters?

The first World Series tournament of the season saw £60,000 pounds of prize money distributed.

As well as Littler’s impressive prize sum, the competition's runner-up also received a cheque.

Bahrain Darts Masters 2024’s runner-up, Michael van Gerwen, will receive half of Littler’s sum, with a cheque of £10,000.
