Hull City defender Alex Bruce receives late Christmas gift after helping a soldier fix his car at a service station

A PREMIER League footballer was sent £5 by a soldier he helped after his car broke down.

Hull City defender Alex Bruce, 32, helped Jay Twining to open his bonnet after he was stranded at a service station.

He later received a letter from Staff Sgt Major Twining, which said he had asked five people to help him but all refused, claiming they were busy.

Mr Twining, based in Colchester, Essex, said he was grateful for Bruce’s time and said he wished there were “more people like you”.

He enclosed a £5 note and told Bruce to buy himself a drink.

Bruce, son of Aston Villa manager Steve, 56, tweeted the letter and said he would “treat myself to a shandy”.

The post has been re-tweeted hundreds of times, with people praising the footballer for his good deed.

He has been out of action since the summer after injuring himself pre-season.

He returned to "light" training in November.
