But he also bumped into Birmingham striker Jay Stansfield on his way down so it is unclear exactly what caused the injury.

Buchanan was treated on the field of play by physios before an ambulance team ran on with a stretcher.

He was then taken away and put in an ambulance ready to be taken to the hospital for further treatment.

Despite the lengthy pause in play, the game has now resumed as normal.

And it was Stansfield, who was involved in the collision, who gave Birmingham the lead against Argyle.

The former England youth international struck in the 15h minute to give Blues the lead.

It's a crucial game for Birmingham manager Wayne Rooney as he comes under increasing pressure in his job.

Rooney was brought in by Birmingham's American owners in October with the club in sixth place.

They are now 18th in the Championship and facing up against fellow relegation strugglers Plymouth.

Victory would move Birmingham up to 15th as they look to pull themselves away from trouble.
