Leroy Sane was giving his marching orders after receiving a straight red card, so Nagelsmann decided to bring on defender Benjamin Henrichs to tighten up the defence.

However he would have been unable to bring on the RB Leipzig star without a break in play.

Nagelsmann whistled at Trapp before shouting at the keeper and gesturing for him to go to ground.

It is a tactic often used by Jose Mourinho as goalkeepers are the only players who do not have to leave the pitch if they require treatment.

Moments later Trapp went to ground and called for assistance - all while looking at the Germany bench.

Fans were up in arms over the underhand tactics as many criticised the Germany manager.

One fan said: "I mean doing it in a league game is one thing but a friendly? Shows how far they have fallen."

Another added: "Beyond embarrassing."
