Frankie Dettori says ‘I have medical reasons’ for wearing sunglasses at Melbourne Cup

Italian was questioned about his shades during a live TV interview.

FRANKIE DETTORI revealed he had 'medical reasons' for wearing sunglasses as he appeared on TV during the Melbourne Cup.

The legendary Italian didn't have a ride in the 'race that stops a nation' but was a brief studio guest during coverage.

He had not long flown in from the States where he banged in an 'impossible' Breeders' Cup winner aboard Inspiral in the Filly & Mare Turf last Saturday.

Dettori is strongly rumoured to be appearing on I'm a Celeb with filming returning to the Australian jungle.

But he sounded a note of alarm to the hit ITV show's producers by saying there were 'medical reasons' behind him wearing sunnies.

Dettori was quizzed on why he had them during an interview an hour before the big race.

And he said: "I had lenses put in my eyes three months ago so the lights are quite bright for me. I have medical reasons."

Dettori, 52, performed a stunning retirement U-turn last month.

Champions Day at Ascot on October 21 was originally meant to be one of his final ever appearances at a racecourse.

But he has recently moved to America and will race there full time.

Dettori's incredible season in the saddle, which included wins in the 2000 Guineas and Ascot Gold Cup, convinced him he still retained his old magic.

But it's a stint on I'm a Celeb that's his biggest upcoming challenge.

It's been said Dettori could be getting as much as £500,000 to tough it out in the jungle.
