'WHAT'S THE POINT?'

PIERS MORGAN doubled down on his rage over Newcastle’s controversial goal against Arsenal as he angrily bickered with Ally McCoist live on talkSPORT.

The Gunners supporter was just as incensed as boss Mikel Arteta after they were on the end of several much-disputed decisions during their 1-0 loss to the Magpies on Saturday.

They believe that Anthony Gordon's strike should not have stood after questions were raised about the ball going out of play in the build up to the goal.

A number of replays were assessed at Stockley Park as VAR refs checked whether the ball had gone out before Joe Willock regained possession.

The ball appeared to cross the touchline before it was crossed back into the North Londoners' penalty area but VAR ultimately deemed that there were no clear angles to show whether or not the ball went out before Willock's cross.

There was also a potential offside and a foul on Gabriel Magalhaes by Joelinton before Gordon put the ball in the net.

But the goal was eventually awarded after a check totalling four minutes and six seconds with Arteta describing VAR as an “absolute disgrace” afterwards, while claiming to be “ashamed” at the standard of Premier League officiating.

Morgan then took to X, formerly Twitter, to unleash his rage over the decision on Saturday as he wrote: “So we all just watched the ball go out of play, then Gabriel get fouled, and then a clear offside. But VAR still gave Newcastle the goal. Just pathetic.”

Arsenal released a defiant statement yesterday backing Arteta’s brutal blast while calling on referees to up their game.

This morning, Morgan joined McCoist live on to discuss the subject with Andy Townsend also in the studio.

And even though he did not fully agree with the club’s statement, he refused to climb down from his own stance on the controversial incident as he argued with McCoist.

McCoist started by saying: “The key words are ‘clear and ‘obvious’ and I don’t think that any of them are clear and obvious. I do think it was a shove…”

Morgan jumped in and said: “So immediately you’ve disagreed with yourself.

“Clearly it was a foul, everybody knows it was a foul.

“From the still photographs that we have seen, that ball is about six inches out of play, clearly he is offside but apparently VAR doesn’t have the technology now to tell us whether the ball has gone out, if there has been a blatant foul or whether there’s a clear offside or whether there’s a clear handball.

“To which my answer would be ‘what’s the point of VAR?’”

Morgan then added: “It sucks all the joy out of it and can’t make four decisions on one incident.”
