Greebe burst onto the scene as a teenager and was good friends with his compatriot Michael van Gerwen.

He even beat his pal Van Gerwen in 2012.

Two years later he stepped away from the pro circuit, subsequently suffering from significant health problems.

In their statement paying tribute, the PDC wrote: "Greebe endured well-documented health issues over recent years, which tragically resulted in him undergoing an amputation on both his right foot and left leg.

"The Dutchman was rushed to hospital in 2017 with a severe infection that led to his right foot being amputated, but he remarkably returned to the winner's circle at the WDF Polish Open in 2019.

"Greebe also reached the Final Stage of PDC Qualifying School in January 2020, although in October 2022, he underwent a second amputation, this time on the lower part of his left leg.

"The sad news of his passing was confirmed on Monday afternoon, and the PDC sends its condolences to the family and friends of Toon at this difficult time."

Fans took to social media to pay tribute to Greebe.
